MUNCIE — The Patriots had a hard time scoring in the first quarter.
It trailed 7-6 after eight minutes.
But a 16-point effort, half of which by Abby Wendel, in the second quarter gave the Jay County High School girls basketball team a lead it didn’t give up in a 47-35 victory Saturday against the Delta Eagles.
It was the 29th straight regular season victory for the Patriots (7-0) under coach Kirk Comer, dating back to 2008. The last time Comer lost a game in the regular season while coaching Jay County was a 50-46 defeat to Connersville on Jan. 12, 2008.
Wendel had 14 of her game-high 18 points in the first half, helping the Patriots take a 22-19 lead into the locker room. She also led the squad with eight rebounds. Freshman Shelby Caldwell was second on the team with 10 points, all of which came in the second half. She also had four rebounds.
Hanna Ault followed with eight points, and Ava Kunkler added four.
Micaya Richardson led Delta (2-6) with 13 points.
The Patriots’ junior varsity squad also moved to 7-0 on the season with a 40-12 thumping of the Eagles.
Klarisa Hemmelgarn and Kendra Muhlenkamp had 10 points apiece to lead Jay County, Gwen Omstead followed with eight, and Audrey Shreve tallied four.

FR girls win
ST. MARYS, Ohio — Fort Recovery Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both beat the St. Marys Roughriders on Saturday.
The Tribe seventh graders won 30-15, and the eighth graders held off St. Marys in a 22-17 victory.
Hope and Kierra Wendel scored 13 and 10 points respectively to lead the FRMS seventh grade squad. Hope Wendel added 13 rebounds to notch her first double-double of the season. Elena Evers had five points and three rebounds, and Alli Vaughn tallied four assists.
Brooke Kahlig led the eighth grders with seven points. Olivia Patch, Chloe Showalter and Macy Day each tallied four points. Val Muhlenkamp had a team-high nine rebounds.
Both teams move to 2-0 on the season.

Tickets on sale
Pre-sale tickets for the Fort Recovery High School football team’s Division VII state championship game Friday at Ohio Stadium in Columbus go on sale today.
Tickets are on sale today from noon to 6 p.m. for the parents of players and cheerleaders only. Season ticket holders may purchase tickets from 4 to 6 p.m.
Sale times for the general public are from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and also from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday.
All pre-sale tickets are $10. Tickets may be purchased at the gate as well, and cost $12 for reserved seat or $15 for club level.
The eighth-ranked Indians (12-2) play No. 2 Mogadore (13-1) at 3 p.m. Friday on the campus of Ohio State University.
