Starfires reach sectional semifinal
DECATUR — A three-goal effort from Lexi Dellinger has put the South Adams High School girls soccer team in the sectional semifinal.
The Starfires (9-6-1) defeated Allen County Athletic Conference foe Woodlan 6-1 on Monday, advancing to the semifinal of the Class A Sectional 37 tournament at Bellmont with the win over the Warriors.
South Adams meets the host Squaws at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Maddie Morgan opened the scoring for South Adams, which has won eight straight games, nine minutes into the contest on an assist from Jordyn Weaver. Then, Dellinger scored twice on assists from Ally Weaver and Morgan to give the Starfires a 3-0 lead with 16 minutes remaining.
Josie Hall’s goal on an assist from Virginia Lagos gave South Adams a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Woodlan broke the shutout 13 minutes into the second half. Dellinger completed her hat trick 15 minutes later for a 5-1 Starfire advantage, and Anna Nussbaum scored on Morgan’s second assist of the night with 10 minutes to play.
Fort falls to No. 4
The Indians have fallen in the polls.
Fort Recovery High School’s football team, which is 6-0 (3-0 Midwest Athletic Conference) for the first time in history, fell one spot in the most recent Associated Press poll to No. 4 in Division VII.
Danville received 16 of 25 first place votes, totaling 205 points for to stay at No. 1. Caldwell, which got four votes for first place, had 198 points to also stay put in second. Lucas, which was No. 4 last week, leaped Fort Recovery and has 153 points, two ahead of the Indians.
Mogadore (5-1) and Warren John F. Kennedy swapped at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively.
Fort Recovery’s conference foe and defending Division VI state champion Minster (4-2) — the teams meet Friday at Barrenbrugge Athletic Park — stayed at No. 7. McComb (5-1) and West Unity Hilltop (6-0) swapped positions from last week and are eighth and ninth.
Norwalk St. Paul (5-1), which was 11th last week, improved one spot and rounds out the top 10.
MAC opponents Coldwater Cavaliers (6-0) and Marion Local Flyers (6-0) are still the top-ranked teams in Division V and Division VII respectively. Both teams are defending state champions, with the Flyers taking home the Division VII crown a year ago.
East Jay runners win
East Jay Middle School’s boys and girls cross country teams finished first Monday in a four-team meet.
The Chief girls had all five scoring runners finish in the top 10, totaling 35 points. Delta was second with 53 points. West Jay and Wes-Del did not have enough runners for a team score.
East Jay’s boys earned five of the top eight spots, totaling 22 points. Delta was second with 49, West Jay placed third with 71 and Wes-Del scored 106 for fourth.
Sophia Fugiett of West Jay won the girls’ race with a time of 13 minutes, 27 seconds. Teammate Hannah Littler was 13th.
Miranda Alig led East Jay with a third-place finish. Lita Chowing was sixth, with Jocelynn Reed, Lindy Wood and Cheyenne Liette crossing the finish line in eighth, ninth and 10th.
Mason and Mitchell Winner of East Jay were one-two in the boys’ race Mason finished in 12:25. Brayden Sprunger placed fourth with teammates Xavier Myers and Flint Schmiesing were seventh and eighth respectively.
Cody Bivens led West Jay with a fifth-place finish. Ethan Adreshak finished 10th, Gage Baker was 14th, Colten Green finished 19th and Dallas Workman was 23rd.
Tribe routs ’Cats
FORT RECOVERY — Clayton Pearson and Robby LeFevre both scored two touchdowns Monday as the Fort Recovery High School freshman football team routed the Minster Wildcats, 26-8.
LeFevre scored rushing touchdowns of 87 and 53 yards. Pearson reached the end zone from 11 yards out as well as from the 4-yard line.
Payton Jutte had a 2-point conversion and an interception.
