Patriots, Starfires advance

ACAC volleyball tournament

MONROEVILLE — The Patriots and Starfires advance to the semifinal Thursday.
They’ll have to beat one another to reach the title match.
The Jay County and South Adams High School volleyball teams both won their opening-round match Tuesday in the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament at Heritage.
The Patriots (22-3), who went a perfect 6-0 to win the regular-season conference championship, defeated the Woodlan Warriors 25-20, 25-10. The Starfires (17-9), meanwhile, disposed of the Bluffton Tigers 25-14, 25-12.
Jay County and South Adams meet in the semifinal at 6 p.m. Thursday, with the winner to face either the Adams Central Flying Jets or host Heritage Patriots in the championship later that night.

Junior Abby Barcus was the lone Patriot to reach double-digit kills. She also had four digs and assisted on a block.
Ava Kunkler and Kylie Osborne followed with eight and seven kills respectively. Osborne tallied five digs, and Kunkler had two to go with her pair of aces.
Lizzy Schoenlein added four kills and totaled a team-high eight digs. She also had 23 assists. Abby Wendel, who was a perfect 15-of-15 from the service line, totaled seven digs, four aces and two kills. Alli Campbell and Chloe Trissel each had three digs as well.
For South Adams, Morgan Alberson and Madi Wurster shared the team high with four kills apiece. Alberson also tallied an ace and had one of the Starfires’ four blocks.
Cindy In’t Groen recorded three kills, two aces and two digs, with Kylie Grabau and Addie Wanner each adding two kills. Wanner also had three blocks. Julie Grabau totaled 13 assists, and Emma Rosswurm had six digs.
