East Jay 8th crushes West Jay
Brian Newman helped the offense.
Gabe Link and Jaycob Hutchins aided the defense.
Newman scored two rushing touchdowns, and Link and Hutchins both returned interceptions for scores as the East Jay Middle School eighth grade football team crushed county rival West Jay 57-0 on Tuesday at Jay County High School.
West Jay’s seventh graders returned the favor, beating East Jay 24-6.
East Jay’s eighth graders (8-2) scored 21 points in the opening quarter, and added 14 more in the second for a 35-0 lead at halftime. The Chiefs put up eight points in the third before tacking on 14 in the final period for the lopsided win.
Newman found the end zone on runs of 2 and 10 yards. Hutchins picked off a pass and returned it 30 yards for a score, and Link’s pick-6 was from the 50-yard line.
Logan Duran, MaCuly LeMaster and Hunter Mills also had rushing touchdowns. Link found Noah Arbuckle for a 52-yard TD pass and catch as well.
West Jay’s seventh graders jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter, and added six more points in the second to lead 18-0 at halftime. Both teams scored in the fourth quarter.
Josh Crouch, Wesley Bennett and Andrew Powers all scored for West Jay. Crouch scampered 62 yards on his first carry of the game, and Powers reached paydirt from 45 yards out. Bennett’s TD run was 80 yards.
Sheldon Eley scored the lone touchdown for East Jay.
