Patriot spikers 3-1 in tourney

LIBERTY — The Patriots handled the three unranked teams in front of them Saturday. It was the one ranked squad that spoiled their day.
Jay County High School’s volleyball team went 3-1 at the Union County Invitational, topping Milan (25-17, 27-29, 15-9), Morristown (25-11), 25-10) and Seton Catholic (25-22, 25-20). Its lone loss came by a 25-15, 25-18 score against Class 2A No. 2 Alexandria.
Abby Barcus powered the Patriots (27-5) in the tournament, racking up more than twice as many kills as anyone else on the team with 49. She also had 19 digs.
Kylie Osborne followed with 24 digs to go along with 4.5 blocks, and Kailee Denney totaled 39 assists, 21 points and eight aces. Ava Kunkler tallied 26 points, and Audrey Shreve recorded nine aces.
Jay County will open sectional play at 7 p.m. Tuesday when it takes on 2014 Class 3A state champion Concordia in the opening round at South Side in Fort Wayne.

JV blasts Heritage
MONROEVILLE — Mitchel Frasher and Michael Schlechty led a scoring onslaught Saturday as the Jay County junior varsity football team blasted to the host Heritage Patriots 52-14.
Frasher scored two of the six JCHS rushing touchdowns in the blowout win. Schlechty hauled in a pair of receiving TDs from quarterback Parker Grimes.
Adding individual TD runs for Jay County (6-2) were Collin Haines, Parker Grimes, Gage Capper and Max Moser.
Moser and Haines each had an interception and Dustin Minnick, Conner Davis, Trent Miller and Gavin Bowen all recorded multiple tackles.

Tribe JV loses
FORT RECOVERY — Clayton Pearson tossed a pair of touchdown passes Saturday, but they were not enough as the Fort Recovery junior varsity football team lost 28-12 to the Marion Local Flyers.
Pearson had a hand in all of the Indians’ points, first tossing a 4-yard touchdown pass to Davis Will. He later completed a 14-yard scoring pass to Ryan Braun.

WJMS places 2nd
West Jay Middle School’s eighth grade volleyball team topped its county rival to reach the finals, but fell 25-18, 25-17 Saturday to the Woodlan Warriors to finish as the Allen County Athletic Conference runner-up.
The win over East Jay came by a 25-14, 25-20 score.
Allison Jobe led the Eagles over the Chiefs in the semifinal with 12 points, including three aces, and 12 assists. Hallie Fields had eight kills, Kymia Hankins scored eight points and Calli Stigleman added five points and four kills.
Hankins tallied 10 points in the championship loss to Woodlan. Stigleman finished with four kills, and Job had six assists, four points and three aces.

FR 7th wins title
The Fort Recovery seventh grade volleyball team won the Midwest Athletic Conference championship Saturday, defeated the New Bremen Cardinals 26-24, 9-25, 25-16 in the final match. It’s other tournament wins came by scores of 25-17, 25-5 over Parkway Panthers and 25-21, 25-18 over the Versailles Tigers.
Kierra Wendel led the Indians (15-2) to the title with team highs of seven kills and 10 digs in the championship match. She also had four points and two aces.
Hope Wendel had 22 assists and four kills, and Ava Bubp put up a team-best 25 assists. Brenna Homan totaled eight digs, Elena Evers scored six points and Paige Fortkamp notched three aces.
Bubp racked up 16 assists, 12 pints and five aces against Versailles and 19 assists, 14 points and three aces against Parkway. Fortkamp totaled four kills in the win over Versailles.
