Starfires close season with win

FORT WAYNE — The Starfires won their regular-season finale in convincing fashion.
South Adams High School’s volleyball team finished its 2015 season Monday with a three-set dismantling of the Fort Wayne South Side Archers.
The Starfires (19-11) won 25-7, 25-11, 25-11.
Kylie Grabau had 11 kills to lead South Adams, which also got five kills each from Cindy In’t Groen, Addie Wanner and Madi Wurster. Morgan Alberson tallied four kills to go with her team-high six aces.
Emma Rosswurm totaled 24 assists. In’t Groen also tallied three aces and two digs.
Jade Farlow led the SAHS junior varsity team with eight kills in its 25-20, 25-15 victory. Shaelynn Bowman was second on the team with seven kills. Bella Bailey added three kills and three aces to go with her team-high 16 assists.
Jay blanks Ole Miss
GAS CITY — The Patriots got off to a good start in the opening quarter on Monday.
They padded their lead in the second and third frames.
Jay County’s freshman football team scored in each of the first three quarters in a 22-0 rout of the Mississinawa Indians.
Thomas Hemmelgarn and Wyatt Geesaman both had rushing touchdowns for the Patriots (5-4). Ryan Schlechty also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
Daniel Ostrowski had three solo tackles and assisted on three more to help the JCHS defense. Two of his tackles were for losses, and he also had 1 1/2 sacks.
Redskins top Tribe
Clayton Pearson had two touchdowns Monday in the Fort Recovery freshman football team’s 30-12 loss to the St. Henry Redskins.
Pearson threw a pair of touchdown passes to Derek Siefring. The first was a 40-yard score, the second of which was from 22-yards out.
Butch Schoen also caught a 2-point conversion pass from Pearson.
The Indians fall to 4-1-1 on the season.
Chiefs swept
GAS CITY — The East Jay Middle School volleyball teams traveled to Gas City Monday to take on the RJ Baskett Indians.
All three teams came back with losses.
The eighth grade Chiefs lost 25-11, 22-25, 15-14. East Jay’s eighth grade squad fell 25-15, 23-25, 15-9, and the sixth graders dropped their match 25-21, 19-25, 15-14.
Macey Weitzel and Elyse Bost led the eighth graders with six and five service points respectively.
Sara Hemmelgarn tallied a team-high four kills to go with her three points, two aces and two blocks. Britney Mullins also had three points and two kills while tallying five digs.
Natalie Miles had eight kills and a block to pace the seventh grade Chiefs. Pacie Denney added four kills and Alana Kunkler tallied three. Grace Saxman and Kunkler had four digs apiece.
Kylie Klopfenstein notched five kills to lead the EJMS sixth graders. Madison Dirksen chipped in with three kills.
