South Adams spikers reach semifinal
Stars meet Bluffton at 1 p.m. Saturday, championship slated for 5 p.m.
WOODBURN — The Starfires are heading to the semifinals.
They’ll face a squad that is all too familiar.
South Adams High School’s volleyball team beat Allen County Athletic Conference foe and host Woodlan in four sets Thursday to reach the semifinal of the Class 2A Sectional 36 tournament.
The Starfires (20-11) knocked off the Warriors 25-20, 27-25, 18-25, 25-19. They meet the Bluffton Tigers, who beat Adams Central earlier in the evening 25-22, 25-16, 25-17, at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Madi Wurster led the Starfire offense with 19 kills. She also had three blocks, three digs and three aces.
Kylie Grabau and Cindy In’t Groen followed with seven and six kills respectively. Grabau also notched a pair of blocks, and In’t Groen tallied seven digs and three aces.
Morgan Alberson totaled five kills and six digs, and Addie Wanner had three kills.
Julia Grabau racked up 32 assists, and Kylea Pierce had a dozen digs.
South Adams is 3-0 this season against Bluffton, including back-to-back 2-0 sweeps in tournaments. The Starfires also beat the Tigers 3-1 on Sept. 10.
The other semifinal — slated for 11 a.m. Saturday — pits the Churubusco Eagles against the Fort Wayne Canterbury Cavaliers. South Adams swept the Cavaliers on Aug. 20 and did not play the Eagles.
The sectional championship is 5 p.m. Saturday.
