Hospice to have gathering
Taking Note
State of the Heart Hospice will hold its annual Remembrance Gathering next month for those who have lost a loved one and want to remember them in a special ceremony.
The gathering will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8 at Fellowship Baptist Church in Portland.
There will be music, scripture readings, sharing and family members will light a candle in memory of their loved one.
Those attending don’t need to be affiliated with hospice. For more information, call (800) 417-7535 or visit www.stateoftheheartcare.org. Light refreshments will be served.
Veteran’s service
Portland American Legion Post No. 211 will have a Veteran’s Day ceremony at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 at Freedom Park.
The legion honor guard will perform a 21-gun salute, Darrell Borders will be the speaker and music will be performed by East Jay Middle School band and swing choir.
Library news
Fans of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books are in for a treat this holiday season.
Laura Keyes will portray Wilder at 2 p.m. on Nov. 21 at Jay County Public Library.
Wilder will reminisce with her family and fiance Almanzo on Christmas Day on the prairie.
Her first book was “Little House in the Big Woods.”
Keyes has a master’s degree in library studies and works at The Illinois Institute of Art — Schaumburg and is active in community theatre.

In recognition of Diabetes Awareness Month, a Diabetes Awareness & Management program will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10.
Kristi Henry from Jay County Hospital will be the guest speaker and will share the cause and effect of diabetes and ways to manage it.
JayCPL Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16. The book “The Goldfinch” by Donna Tartt will be discussed.
Preschool playtimes will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30.
Story times will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 10, 17 and 24 and at 4:30 p.m. Thursday and also on Nov. 5, 12 and 19.
Mother Goose & Me will meet at 10 a.m. Friday and also on Nov. 6, 13 and 20.
Lego Club will meet between 2:30 and 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 10, 17 and 24.
Holiday auction
Arts Place, 131 E. Walnut St. in Portland, will have its 33rd annual Holiday Benefit Auction on Friday, Nov, 20.
Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the auction will begin at 6 p.m.
There is no charge and refreshments will be served.
