Wanner pick, TD garners honor

Taylor University fell behind 10-0 Saturday to the Concordia Cardinals.
Dustin Wanner and his teammates wouldn’t allow that lead to stand.
After his team pulled to within 10-7 early in the second quarter, Wanner, a 2012 South Adams High School graduate, returned an interception for a touchdown that put the Trojans ahead for good on the way to a 35-24 victory. That effort led him to earning Mid-States Football Association Mideast League defensive player of the week honors.
Taylor (5-3) closed to within 10-7 with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Everett Pollard to Andrew Sheard with 13:05 left in the second quarter. On the third play of the ensuing drive, Wanner picked off a pass from Concordia quarterback Tyler Fehler and returned it 44 yards to the end zone. His TD gave the Trojans two scores in 61 seconds.
The senior also had five of his seven tackles in the opening half.
Wanner, a defensive back, has 15 tackles and two interceptions in five games this season.
Kelsey Fiely
Fort Recovery – 2013
Came off the bench to record double-digit digs for the University of Northwestern Ohio volleyball team Friday in the opening match of the Cornerstone University Tournament.
Fiely racked up 11 digs as the Racers (13-20) lost in four games to the University of St. Francis. She also had two aces and two assists.
The junior notched 10 digs and four assists Wednesday in UNOH’s25-15, 25-21, 25-23 loss to Aquinas.
Fiely had eight digs apiece in Cornerstone tournament wins over Rochester and Point Park, and recorded seven in a victory over Spring Arbor. She added four aces and an assist in the 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 sweep of Point Park.
Eric Hemmelgarn

Had a team-high 2 1/2 tackles for a loss for the University of Saint Francis football team in a come-from-behind road victory against the NAIA No. 9 Robert Morris Eagles.
The Eagles scored 14 points in the second quarter for a 14-7 lead, but the seventh-ranked Cougars scored 31 points in the second half for the victory.
Hemmelgarn, a redshirt freshman, recorded his first stop early in the second quarter, bringing down running back Raheem Gardner for a 4-yard loss on first-and-10. Later in the period, he brought down Gardner again for a 2-yard loss on first-and-goal from the USF 3-yard line.
He then teamed with Jalen McIntyre in the fourth quarter to tackle Gardner in the backfield for a 2-yard loss.
Cassidy Rammel
Fort Recovery – 2015
Was third on the team with 11 kills for the University of Saint Francis volleyball team Friday in a 25-16, 15-25, 27-25, 25-19 victory against Northwestern Ohio.
The freshman’s 27 total attacks were second-most for the Cougars (10-22).
She also had four kills the same day in a 3-0 loss to Cornerstone, and posted three kills and back-to-back matches against Sienna Heights (Saturday) and Indiana Wesleyan (Wednesday), both three set losses. Rammel tallied one dig against IWU.
Katy Smeltzer
Jay County – 2015
Played her part in three victories for the University of the Cumberlands women’s swim team Saturday as it finished first against St. Catharine and Bethel.
She earned an individual victory in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.1 seconds, beating Nava Pyne of Bethel College by more than two seconds.
Smeltzer also swam the third leg for the first-place 200 freestyle relay team. She had a split time of 25.18 seconds, joining Morgan Plowman, Jessica Pope and Anna Clayton to finish in 1:44.46.
She teamed with Christina Klouda, Victoria Tornelli and Kristi Burnette to win the 200 medley relay. Smeltzer swam the butterfly leg with a split time of 26.93 seconds. They had a total time of 1:56.16.
Hannah Moore
South Adams – 2012
Turned in the No. 2 time for the Huntington University women’s cross country team to a 10th-place finish Saturday at the 26-team NAIA Great Lakes Challenge at Aquinas.
Moore was the No. 2 runner for the Foresters as she finished the 5K race in 20 minutes, 25.85 seconds. She took 55th overall in a field of nearly 300 runners.
Abigail Johnson
Jay County – 2014
Also ran in the Great Lakes Challenge for the Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats’ women’s cross country team.
The sophomore finished in 21 minutes, 41.04 seconds. She was 141st overall, and 21st on the team for the Wildcats, who placed third with 88 points.
Aleesha Goodwin
South Adams – 2015
Ran for the Indiana Tech women’s cross country team at the Great Lakes Challenge.
The freshman ran to a time of 22 minutes, 25.28 seconds, to finish 178th overall. She was the No. 6 runner for the Warriors, who placed 12th out of 29 teams with 353 points.
Randa Gillespie
Jay County – 2012
Helped lead the Manchester University volleyball team’s defense Saturday as it cruised to a 25-17, 25-17, 25-14 victory over Governors State.
Gillespie finished tied for second on the squad as she recorded nine digs for the Spartans (9-16). She has 60 digs in 27 sets this season.
Julie Valentine

Paced the Stephens College women’s cross country team as it competed Saturday at the St. Louis Fall Classic.
Valentine led the way for the Stars with a time of 23 minutes, 42 seconds, in the 5K race. She finished 76th overall.
