East Jay eighth graders blank Adams Central
MONROE — The East Jay Middle School eighth grade football team moved to 2-0 on the season Tuesday with a 20-0 shutout of the Adams Central Jets.
The seventh grade Chiefs were on the losing end of a 33-0 score.
MaCuly LeMaster led the EJMS eighth graders on both sides of the football. He scored a 75-yard rushing touchdown on the first play of the game, and finished with 102 yards on the ground.
He also had nine tackles and a sack on defense.
Gabe Link connected with Noah Arbuckle for a 20-yard score in the second quarter, and Jackson Lyons had a 30-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
Drake Mason and Derrick Allen both recovered fumbles for the Chiefs.
R.J. Lennartz had 50 yards on 10 carries for the seventh graders. Landon Grimes completed two passes to Sheldon Eley for 55 yards.
The Chief seventh graders fell to 1-1 on the season.
Chiefs win twice
East Jay’s boys and girls cross country teams defeated West Jay and Woodlan on Tuesday at Hudson Family Park.
The EJMS boys beat Woodlan 15-48 and West Jay 17-38. The Chief girls beat Woodlan 27-26. West Jay did not qualify for a team score.
East Jay’s Mason and Mitchell Winner placed first and second respectively in the boys’ race. Mason had a time of 13 minutes, 16 seconds, and Mitchell crossed the finish line in 13:43.
Braydon Springer (13:44), Ben Strausburg (14:14) and Flint Schmiesing (14:18) the also contributed to the Chiefs’ team score.
Cody Bivens led West Jay, finishing in 14:07. Ethan Andershak (15:26), Colten Gran (17:44), Dallas Workman (19:20), Gage Baker (19:24) and Justice Murphy (19:42) ran for West Jay.
In the girls’ race, West Jay’s Sophia Fugiett finished second in 14:24. Her teammate Hannah Littler was 11th.
Lindy Wood led the Chiefs, placing second in 15:57. Lita Chowning was fourth, Miranda Alig placed fifth and Cheyenne Liette finished sixth. Jocelyn Reed placed seventh.
EJ sweeps Bluffton
East Jay’s seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams both defeated the Bluffton Tigers on Tuesday.
The eighth graders won 25-16, 25-17, and the seventh graders beat Bluffton 25-17, 25-11.
Logan Poore led the eighth graders with 12 service points, nine of which were aces. She also had two kills.
Macey Weitzel had five aces on her way to six points, and also added a kill and an assist.
Sarah Hemmelgarn tallied three kills to go with her five points. Britney Mullins, Elyse Bost and Shadie Canterbury all had two points.
Alana Kunkler led the seventh grade Chiefs with four kills. She also had five aces. Natalie Miles had a team-high 11 aces, with Pacie Denney adding seven to go with her three assists. Miles also had two kills.
Eagles top Raiders
PONETO — Wesley Bennett scored all three touchdowns for the West Jay seventh grade football team in a 20-0 victory Tuesday at Southern Wells.
The eighth grade Eagles lost 34-0.
Bennett had 155 yards on just six carries, scoring touchdowns of three, 70 and 25 yards. He also had a team-high 13 tackles and one sack.
Logan Brown had 26 rushing yards and Austin Roser tallied 21.
Josh Crouch recorded seven tackles and Roser had six.
Bennett also played for the eighth grade team, and he totaled 42 rushing yards on three carries. Cole Wendel had 12 rushes for 32 yards.
Storm McLaughlin had 58 passing yards, 32 of which were to Peyton Nichols.
Dylan Bland and Sean Ashley had four tackles apiece for the Eagles.
Stars romp Tigers
BLUFFTON — The South Adams middle school football teams were at the winning end of lopsided scores Tuesday.
The Starfire eighth graders beat the Bluffton Tigers 40-6, and the seventh graders won 56-0.
For the SAHS eighth graders, Nic Stuber had a 30-yard touchdown pass to Collin Shaffer in the first quarter, then rushed for three more scores in the second quarter.
Grady Sprunger and Shaffer had rushing touchdowns in the third and fourth quarter respectively.
Braden Bixler took the opening kickoff of the seventh grade contest 65 yards for a touchdown.
Aaron Timmons had two rushing touchdowns, and James Arnold threw for one touchdown and ran for another. That was just in the first half.
Spencer Fear and Nick Miller also recorded rushing touchdowns after intermission, and Alex Gorney returned an interception 23 yards for a score.
FR undefeated
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s volleyball teams remained perfect with wins against Marion Local on Tuesday.
The seventh graders beat the Flyers 25-22, 11-25, 25-15. The eighth graders won 21-25, 25-7, 25-23.
Paige Fortkamp had six kills and five service points to lead the FRMS seventh graders. Brenna Homan and Hope Wendel each had four kills. Wendel also had nine assists. Ava Bubp had a team-high seven points to go with her six assists.
Paige Jutte and Brooke Kahlig led the eighth graders with eight and seven kills respectively. Olivia Patch added five kills and Val Muhlenkamp tallied four. Chloe Showalter led the Indians with 11 assists, and Rachel Acheson tallied eight assists.
Both teams move to 3-0 (2-0 Midwest Athletic Conference).
