Starfire girls soccer shuts out Bulldogs

NEW HAVEN — Lexi Dellinger recorded a hat trick in the first half.
She and her Starfire teammates continued to score in the second.
Dellinger scored four times as the South Adams High School girls soccer team defeated the New Haven Bulldogs, 6-1.
Midway through the opening half, Dellinger scored on a breakaway, and completed her hat trick in the next eight minutes on assists from Jordyn Weaver.
Alyssa Bertsche assisted on Dellinger’s fourth goal not even three minutes into the second half. Weaver tallied her third helper of the contest on Riley Liechty’s goal in the 53rd minute.
Tori Riley scored the sixth and final goal for the Starfires (2-5) with less than eight minutes left in the game.
JC golf second
YORKTOWN — The Patriot girls golf team placed second Tuesday against the host Yorktown Tigers and Wes-Del Warriors.
Yorktown scored a 191 to win the match. Jay County had a team total of 218, beating Wes-Del by 10 strokes.
JCHS senior Brooke Sanders led the Patriots with a score of 51.
Fellow seniors Rachel Antrim and Sydney Robbins — Jay County’s No. 3 and No. 4 golfers respectively — finished with matching rounds of 54.
Abby Saxman, also a senior, completed the Patriots’ team total with a 59.
Kendra Dodd also competed and she finished with a 62.
Jay County returns to Delaware County Thursday to take on Delta at 4:30 p.m.
SA boys tie ’Dogs
BERNE — The South Adams boys soccer team snapped a two-game losing skid with a 1-1 draw with the New Haven Bulldogs.
South Adams (4-2-1) took an early lead on a goal by Brian O’Donnell four minutes into the contest. His shot ricocheted off the Bulldog goalkeeper and deflected back into the net. Xavier Rupp was credited with the assist.
The Starfires hung on to their lead for the remainder of the half, but the visiting Bulldogs scored the equalizer in the 56th minute.
Despite getting a number of chances, neither team was able to break the tie.
SAHS goalkeeper Tyler Sprunger had a dozen saves. The Starfires peppered the Bulldog keeper with 27 shots.
Tennis wins 10th
MONROE — South Adams has relied on its singles players all season.
They’ve been the strength of the Starfire boys tennis team.
Those three came through once again Thursday, helping South Adams to a 3-2 victory against Allen County Athletic Conference rival Adams Central.
It was the 10th victory of the season for the Starfires, who have lost just one match.
At No. 1 singles, David Villarroel defeated Ben Kahlert 6-1, 6-1, and David Muselman beat Jared Ripley at No. 2 singles 6-0, 7-5.
Dexter Miller was victorious at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2 against James Weil.
The Stars’ No. 1 doubles team of Kam DeLong and Marcus Teeter lost to Zach Green and Tanner Roth 6-3, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Adams Central’s Joel Mailloux and Chad Biberstine beat Jamison Kistler and Zach Teeple 7-5, 7-0.
South Adams’ junior varsity team lost 5-0.
Stars win opener
PONETO — South Adams’ volleyball team moved to 9-2 on the season Tuesday with a sweep of the Southern Wells Raiders.
The Starfires defeated the Raiders 25-19, 29-27, 27-25.
It was the ACAC opener for both teams.
Kylie Grabau had 10 kills to lead the Starfires. She also had two blocks, two aces and three digs.
Madelyn Wurster tallied six kills to go with her two blocks, and Cindy In’t Groen tallied four kills, six aces and two digs.
Morgan Alberson notched three kills, and matched Caralie Farlow’s five digs.
Julia Grabau recorded 13 digs and 20 assists, both of which were team highs.
Patriot JV wins
Parker Grimes had a hand in two touchdowns.
Ivan Hemmelgarn and Mitchell Frasher found the end zone as well.
Jay County’s junior varsity football team opened its Allen County Athletic Conference slate Tuesday with a 28-8 win against the Southern Wells Raiders.
Grimes ran for a touchdown and threw for another as the Patriots moved to 2-1 (1-0 ACAC) on the season. Grimes scored a rushing TD from 10 yards out, and connected with Shane Stant for a 10-yard passing touchdown.
Hemmelgarn reached paydirt on a 20-yard run, and Frasher had a 46-yard scamper.
The Patriots’ next game is 5:30 p.m. Monday in Monroe against Adams Central.
Tribe blanks Anna
FORT RECOVERY — Clayton Pearson scored in every quarter Tuesday.
The Rockets didn’t score. Period.
Pearson scored touchdowns in three different ways, and also added a pair of 2-point conversions, as the Fort Recovery freshman football team shut out the Anna Rockets, 28-0.
Fort Recovery led 6-0 after the first quarter and 12-0 at halftime. The Tribe scored eight points in each of the third and fourth quarters.
Pearson had touchdown runs of 25 and 20 yards, and returned one of his three interceptions 70 yards for a score as well. He also found Peyton Jutte for a 5-yard TD pass.
