Open house will be Saturday at center
Taking Note
Jay County Retirement Center will host an open house Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Tour the facility or relax on the porch with the residents. There will be free hot dogs and drinks.
The center is located at 1194 E. 200 North, Portland.
Heritage festival
The 13th Annual Jay County Heritage Festival will be held in October with the theme “Cruise to the Past — Auto Dealerships of Jay County.”
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, on the Jay County Historical Society Museum grounds, 903 E. Main St. in Portland.
Exhibits inside the museum will be related to car dealerships in Jay County from the days of the Model T until about 1990, including a power point program. Vintage cars will be displayed outside.
Entertainment will include the Harmony Strings Band, vocalists Erica Frazee (patriotic and spiritual) and Scherry Ramsey (50s and 60s), Adlie Hedges and his fiddle, Adams County Cloggers, Annie Ford, Asbury Praise Band, Jay County Community Band and pianist Gabe Bailey.
Soarin’ Hawk Raptors from Fort Wayne will show a bald eagle and other birds. There will also be crafters, demonstrators, re-enactors in a pioneer encampment, games, crafts, a one-room school and teacher and horse and wagon rides.
Kettle cooked ham and beans with corn bread will be served on Saturday and kettle cooked chicken and noodles and mashed potatoes will be served on Sunday. The meals are $6 and include a cupcake and drink.
Also foot long hot dogs and coney dogs, burger baskets, ice cream Sundaes and floats, cotton candy, caramel corn and sugar cream pie will be sold.
