Jay Co. falls to Golden Falcons

WINCHESTER — The Patriots defeated the Golden Falcons for the sectional championship in 2014.
The Golden Falcons had the upper hand Thursday.
Jay County High School’s boys tennis team lost to Winchester, 3-2, in a rematch of the sectional final from a year ago.
The Patriots’ won two of the three singles matches. At No. 2 singles, junior Jay Houck beat Aaron Wallace 6-3, 6-1, and sophomore Garrett Rodgers defeated Hagan Lawson at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 1 singles, JCHS senior Alex Clark lost to Arik Miller 6-1, 6-3.
After failing to win a game in the first set, Jay County’s No. 2 doubles team of Luke Weaver and Evan Van Cise rallied to win the second 6-3, but dropped the third 6-1 in a loss to Michael Georgi and Drake Moody.
Sok Vormohr and Payton Heniser lost 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles to Mason Melton and Trey Graft.
Sophomore Jason Minnich earned the only win for the Patriot junior varsity team. He beat Flynt Runkle 6-4.

Patriot girls lose
DECATUR — Jay County High School’s girls soccer team was at the losing end of a 4-1 score with the host Bellmont Squaws on Thursday.
It lost one of its seniors as well.
Emma Laux left the game with an ankle injury.
Laux’s sister Lucy scored the lone goal for the Patriots (5-2-1). Laux notched her 15th score of the season on an assist from Stormi Canterbury, who now has five helpers this year.
But Bellmont scored three goals in the second half, one of which came on a penalty kick, to put the game out of reach for the visitors.
Jay County will host Centerville at 10 p.m. Saturday, with senior day festivities to follow.

’Skins sweep FR
FORT RECOVERY — After battling in the first set, the Indians weren’t able to get much going in the final two.
The St. Henry Redskins, who were 11th in the most recent Division III coaches’ poll, swept the Fort Recovery volleyball team 25-23, 25-19, 25-9.

Kendra Siefring and Carley Stone both had six kills to lead the Indians, who fell to 6-6 (0-2 Midwest Athletic Conference). Stone added five digs and four aces, with Siefring contributing three digs and two blocks.
The FRHS junior varsity squad also lost, 25-21, 18-25, 25-11.
Hannah Knapke had 12 kills and 18 digs for the Indians. Grace Thien and Audra Metzger tallied 19 and 15 digs respectively.

Eagle 8th wins
DUNKIRK — West Jay Middle School’s eighth grade volleyball team overcame a second-set loss to beat county rivals East Jay on Thursday.
The Eagles won the first set 25-12, but lost the second 25-9. They bounced back to win the third 15-9 to take the match.
East Jay’s seventh grade squad defeated West Jay, 25-13, 25-13.
Logan Poore had 10 points, seven of which were aces, to lead the East Jay eighth graders. Elyse Bost added six points and two aces, and Sara Hemmelgarn tallied four points. Emma James tallied four digs, and Hannah James had a pair of assists.
Natalie Miles had two kills to lead the EJMS seventh graders. Ashlyn Dow had one. Pacie Denney recorded six aces, with Alana Kunkler and Zoey Elzey adding five and four respectively.
West Jay’s stats were not available.

FRMS sweeps Blue Jays
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade football teams both defeated the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays on Thursday.
The seventh graders won 36-6, and the eighth graders had a 12-8 victory.
Derek Jutte had three total touchdowns to lead the seventh graders. He had two rushing scores, one from the 2-yard line and the other from 40 yards out. He also had a punt return for a touchdown.
Owen Moorman and Ryne Post also had rushing touchdowns of 70 and 10 yards respectively.
Jacob Acheson scored both touchdowns for the eighth graders and also had an interception.
