Willis wins, Starfires move on

Saturday’s effort earned her a sectional championship.
It also helped the Starfires advance to regional.
Willis led the South Adams High School girls golf team to a third-place finish in the sectional tournament at Timber Ridge Golf Course.
Homestead knocked off defending champion Bellmont, shooting a 333 to earn the team title. Bellmont finished second with 367, and South Adams totaled 376. The top three teams advance to regional, which is Saturday at Noble Hawk Golf Club in Kendallville.
Willis, who was second at last year’s tournament, was 1-over par with a 73. She was even through the first five holes before making birdie on the par-3 sixth. She bogeyed seven and eight, and made par on ninth to make the turn at 1-over.
She birdied the par-4 10th before rattling off five consecutive pars. The senior then finished bogey, birdie, bogey to beat the field by three strokes.
Jaci Gorrell was second for the Starfires with a 97. Kaiti Gorrell and Amy Schwartz tied at 103 to complete the team total for South Adams. Becah Schwartz also competed, and she finished with a 109.

Tribe sweep ’Hawks
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery bounced back from being swept by St. Henry with a sweep of its own Saturday.
The Tribe volleyball team dominated the Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks in three sets, 25-12, 25-15, 25-9.
Kendra Siefring led the Indians (8-6) with 13 kills, and Carley Stone added 11. Stone also tallied a pair of blocks and aces.
Kirsten Jutte had 16 assists to go with her five kills. Cassidy Martin tallied five kills and Kiah Wendel notched four aces.
The Indians’ junior varsity squad also won, 25-21, 25-11.
Hannah Knapke tallied five kills and four digs to lead Fort Recovery. Sydney Dues, Madi Rammel and Brooke Gaerke had four kills apiece, with Rammel adding 12 assists. Grace Thien also totaled four digs.

JC freshman fall
Gabe Faulkner rushed for one touchdown and threw for another Saturday as the Jay County freshman football team lost to the Richmond Red Devils, 38-20.

Jay County trailed 16-6 after the first quarter, and saw its deficit reach 30-14 heading into halftime. The Red Devils outscored the Patriots 8-6 in the third quarter, and the final period was scoreless.
Faulkner was 7-of-13 passing for 136 yards and a score. Three of those passes, including the touchdown, were to Wyatt Geesaman, who also added a two-point conversion.
Thomas Hemmelgarn scored the other touchdown for the Patriots. He had 47 yards on 10 carries, and Daniel Ostrowski added 46 yards on the ground. Noah Harris had three receptions for 53 yards.

Chiefs 1-3
SELMA — East Jay Middle School’s eighth grade volleyball team was 1-3 Saturday at the Selma Invitational.
The Chiefs dropped their first match to Southwood, 25-20, 23-25, 15-12, then bounced back to defeat Connersville 22-25, 25-23, 15-12.
East Jay then fell to host Selma (25-13, 25-15) and Daleville (25-23, 25-16).
Elyse Bost led the Chiefs with 12 aces on her way to a team-high 18 service points. Kassidy Fennig had five aces and 17 points, and Macey Weitzel tallied eight aces on her way to 15 points.
Logan Poore and Shadie Canterbury also reached double-digit point totals. They both had 11.
Bost and Weitzel also tallied four kills apiece.

DeHoff gets ace
Fred DeHoff has been golfing a long time.
He finally got an ace.
DeHoff aced the par-3 15th hole Saturday at Portland Golf Club. He used a 3-wood hybrid on the hole, which was playing at 173 yards.
Tom Meinerding and Pat Bennett were there to witness his feat.
