Teachers receive grants
Taking Note
The board of trustees of The Portland Foundation approved Teacher Creativity Mini-Grants totaling $2,735.31.
The program is funded by the Virgil and Josephine Thomas Educational Fund, a component of the foundation, and funds grants for field trips, classroom supplies, class projects, programs, music or art instruction, speakers, educational materials and seminars.
Rachel Arnold, music teacher at East Elementary School and Judge Haynes Elementary School, was awarded a grant to purchase materials for a maypole at each school. Each school will receive $240.18.
Carol Bantz, Westlawn Elementary first-grade teacher, was awarded a $247.50 grant to purchase Big Books book sets.
Gina Brockman, East Jay Middle School eighth-grade teacher, was awarded a $204.00 grant to purchase Kuta math software.
Kristen Gibson, Bloomfield Elementary School fifth-grade teacher, was awarded a $244.92 grant to Franklin Anybook Readers.
Zach Keller, Jay County High School math teacher, was awarded a $178.79 grant to purchase Hot Wheels for an Algebra class demonstration.
LaVetha Loucks, music teacher at Redkey Elementary and Westlawn Elementary, was awarded a grant to purchase materials for a maypole for both schools. Each school will receive $240.18.
Beth Mathewson, Jay School Corporation Speech and Language, was awarded a $149.95 grant to purchase the HearBuilder Auditory Memory program.
Emily Reynolds, Jay School Corporation occupational therapist, was awarded a $249.43 grant to purchase Hokki stools.
Sara Wolf, kindergarten teacher at Westlawn Elementary, was awarded a $250 grant to purchase Big Books book sets.
Rod Wolford, fifth-grade teacher at General Shanks Elementary, was awarded a $250 grant to purchase a Chrome Book.
Craft show
The Main St. USA Craft Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3 at West Jay Middle School in Dunkirk.
There will be craft vendors and food sold by local churches and organizations.
The craft show is sponsored by Zeta Chi Chapter of Delta Theta Tau sorority.

William Heath, author of “William Wells and the Struggle for the Old Northwest” will speak at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Fort Recovery State Museum.
Wells led the attack on St. Clair’s artillery in the 1791 battle on the banks of the Wabash. But after that battle he had a change of heart, joined Wayne’s army and played an important role in the defeat of the Native Confederation in 1794 in the battle of Fort Recovery.

Cruise-in
Dellen Ford Lincoln will host the inaugural Hot Rods for Hunger Cruise-In to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank.
The event will be held from noon until 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana, 6621 N. old state road 3 in Muncie (next to the Water Bowl.)
The entry fee for the cruise-in is a freewill donation. For more information, call Bill Schumacher at (765) 213-2718.
Safety class
Indiana State Police Sergeant Dan Mawhorr will teach a personal safety class at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Arthur & Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion at Swiss Village in Berne.
Mawhorr will focus on knowing your surroundings and how to handle jeopardizing situations.

Genealogy workshop
The Darke County Genealogical Society, Inc. will host a fall genealogy workshop on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Garst Museum in Greenville, Ohio.
Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and the guest speaker will be Karen Krugman.
