Stars snap losing skid

WINCHESTER — South Adams High School’s volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak Thursday in a win against Winchester.
The Starfires dropped the first set 25-20, but rallied to beat the Golden Falcons in the next three, 25-20, 25-22, 25-10.
Kylie Grabau paced the Starfires (14-6), posting team highs in both kills (10) and blocks (five). She also added four digs.
Morgan Alberson and Addie Wanner had nine and eight kills respectively. Kylea Pierce had 21 digs, and Alberson added nine.
Cindy In’t Groen had six kills, and matched Julia Grabau and Caralie Farlow with six digs each. Wanner also had four blocks, and Grabau had 18 assists.
South Adams’ junior varsity squad held off Winchester in the opening set but dominated in the second to the tune of a 25-24, 25-7 victory.
Jade Farlow and Sydney Pierce had nine and four kills respectively. Bella Bailey recorded three kills and 10 assists.
Indians sweep SA
GAS CITY — The South Adams boys tennis team lost its third match of the season Thursday, a 5-0 defeat to the Mississinewa Indians.
Senior Dexter Miller battled Paxton Sample at No. 3 singles, losing in three sets 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). David Muselman, a sophomore, lost to Isaac Torres at No. 2 singles 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). David Villarroel dropped his No. 1 singles match to Jared May, 6-3, 7-5.
At No. 1 doubles, Marcus Teeter and Aidan Bahre of South Adams lost to Brandon Herring and Connor Stark 6-0, 6-3. The Starfires’ No. 2 doubles tandem fell 6-3, -5, to Dalton Brown and Breyton Berryhill.
South Adams fell to 15-3 on the season.
Jay falls to Giants
MARION — Four minutes into the game, the Giants found the back of the net.
They did it four more times in the final 76 minutes Thursday.
Jay County’s boys soccer team lost 5-1 to the Marion Giants, falling to 5-5 on the season.
Marion had a 4-0 lead heading into halftime until Ian Reynolds scored his first goal of the season to cut the deficit to 4-1.
The Giants extended their lead later in the half, and the Patriots weren’t able to convert on their offensive chances.
It was the second loss in as many games for Jay County, which had won the previous four games.
The Patriots’ junior varsity team also lost, 4-1. Derrian Riojas scored the lone goal for the visitors on an assist from Daniel Fugiett.
