Winner sets new record for East Jay boys

Mason Winner has been the best runner for East Jay Middle School’s cross country team this season.
Now he’s the best in school history.
Winner crossed the finish line in 12 minutes, 17 seconds, Thursday to set a new school record in a meet against Monroe Central and Wes-Del.
Winner finished first, helping his team to 24 points and a pair of victories. Monroe Central was second (35), and Wes-Del (84) placed third.
East Jay’s girls also won with a score of 29. Monroe Central (51) placed second, and Wes-Del did not have enough for a team score.
Mitchell Winner placed third for the EJMS boys, with Brayden Sprunger finishing fifth. Xavier Myers (seventh) and Ben Strausburg (eighth) completed the Chiefs’ team total.
Miranda Alig led the EJMS girls with a second-place finish in 14:38. Lindy Wood, Cheyenne Liette, Lita Chowning and Ella Roessner were fifth through eighth for the Chiefs. Gabby Beckham of Monroe Central was the race winner in 13:39.
East Jay earned the top five spots in the boys junior varsity race. Christian Marentez was the winner in 14:22, with Dylan Knapschafer, Dustin Harris, Matthew Minnich and Adam Muhlenkamp finishing behind him.
Chiefs sweep Indians
UNION CITY — Natalie Miles and Ashlyn Dow led the East Jay seventh grade volleyball team in a victory against Union City on Thursday.
The Chiefs won 25-17, 25-14, and the eighth graders earned a 25-14, 24-25, 15-4 win against the Indians.
Miles tallied eight kills, and Dow had nine aces as she was 15-of-17 from the service line. Alana Kunkler chipped in with three kills and three assists for the seventh graders. Miles also added three aces, and Pacie Denney had a team-high seven assists.
Britney Mullins had four aces on her way to 10 service points for the EJMS eighth graders. She also recorded four kills.
Elyse Bost tallied seven points and five aces, and shared the team lead of four assists with Hannah James. Kassidy Fennig also had seven points.
Macey Weitzel had five kills, and Sara Hemmelgarn added three.
FR outlasts Panthers
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s eighth grade volleyball team outlasted the Parkway Panthers on Thursday in a 25-6, 25-27, 25-16 victory.
The FRMS seventh graders also won, 25-6, 25-23.
Paige Jutte had a team-high 10 kills for the eighth graders, with Val Muhlenkamp contributing seven kills. Olivia Patch added five kills and three blocks.
Chloe Showalter recorded 12 assists, and Brooke Kahlig tallied 19 points, including four aces. Rachel Acheson notched six assists and 12 points.
For the seventh grade Indians, Paige Fortkamp led the team with four kills. Ava Bubp had 13 service points and five assists, and Kendra Dues added 14 points as she was a perfect 14-for-14 from the service line.
