Starfire boys second at Culver

CULVER — The Starfires have consistently been near the top of every race this season.
Saturday was no different.
South Adams High School’s boys cross country team finished second in the closed division of the Culver Invitational. Brown County won the team title with 115 points, with the Starfires totaling 133. Washington Township placed third with 139.
The Starfire girls finished 10th in the open division with 277 points. Sylvania Northview won with 89 points, New Prairie finished second with 106 and Hanover Central placed third with 127.
Wyatt Miller and Daniel Steffen finished seventh and 10th respectively to lead the Starfire boys. Miller crossed the finish line in 17 minutes, 33 seconds, and Steffen was 16 seconds behind him.
McGerran Clouser (17:59) was 16th to give the South Adams three runners in the top 20.
Briar Goodwin (18:53) was 37th and Kamden Yoder (19:32) was 63rd.
In the elite race, McIntire finished 15th in 16:26.8.
Olivia Von Gunten was the lone Starfire girl in the top 20. She finished 10th in 20:29. Kara Seffernick and Acacia Anderson were the No. 2 and No. 3 runners respectively for South Adams. Seffernick was 26th in 21:14 and Anderson finished in 21:52 for 50th. Katelin Hawbaker (89th – 22:53) and Olivia Mason (102nd – 23:22) completed the team score.
Moyer, Lopez score
YORKTOWN — Levi Moyer and Gavino Lopez both scored their first goal of the season Saturday.
They were the only goals for the Jay County High School boys soccer team in a 5-2 loss to the Yorktown Tigers.
Yorktown, which is a sectional rival of the Patriots, had a 2-0 lead after halftime, until Moyer netted his first goal on an assist from Zaaron Lee.
Lopez scored a short time later to tie the score at 2-2, but the Tigers rattled off three consecutive goals for the win.
The Patriots fell to 5-6, and have lost three straight games.
Jay County’s junior varsity team played to a 1-1 tie with Yorktown.
Ian McCombs scored the lone goal for the Patriots, and Matt Paquette assisted.
