Indians’ boys, girls golfers earn all-MAC nod

Four Fort Recovery High School boys golfers earned all-conference honors on Monday.
Five of the Tribe girls were also recognized by the Midwest Athletic Conference.
Senior Jackson Hobbs was the lone representative on the MAC first team. He shot an 87 to finish sixth on Saturday in the MAC tournament at Arrowhead Golf Club in Minster. Chase Bruns, Hobbs’ classmate, was named to the second team after his 16th-place finish with an 89.
Micaiah Cox and Nick Litmer both carded 91s for honorable mention.
The FRHS boys totaled 358 to finish fourth in the conference tournament. Versailles had 346 to win the team title.
Seniors Tori Vaughn and Trisha Thien were both first-team all-MAC honorees. Vaughn and Thien finished seventh and eighth respectively. Vaughn shot a 95 and Tien was two strokes behind her.
Cori Stone (116), Emily Bruns (121) and Elli Keller (139) earned honorable mention.
Fort Recovery totaled 429 to place fourth. Versailles won the girls’ team championship too with a 366.
Morgan, Stars win
BERNE — The Starfires started the season slowly, going 1-6 through their first seven games.
Now, the South Adams girls soccer team is above .500.
Maddie Morgan scored two goals and assisted on four more, helping the Starfires to a 7-0 victory against the Woodlan Warriors on Saturday.
Morgan assisted on three first-half goals, one by Jordyn Weaver 30 seconds into the contest. Lexi Dellinger then added back-to-back scores.
The senior then found the back of the net twice, as the Starfires (7-6, 2-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) had a 5-0 lead heading into halftime.
Haley Gerber scored on an assist from Riley Liechty midway through the second half, and Morgan helped on a goal by Virginia Lagos.
Jay JV wins
Collin Haines and Mitchell Frasher both scored for the Patriots.
Max Moser sealed the win.
Haines and Frasher both had rushing touchdowns, and Moser picked off a pass late in the game Monday to seal a 14-6 victory for the Jay County junior varsity football team against the Woodlan Warriors.
Jay County (4-2) had a 6-0 lead in the second quarter, and held on to it until the third quarter when Woodlan tied the game.
The Patriots scored in the final period, and held on for the win.
Michael Schlechty added a two-point conversion on a pass from Parker Grimes.
Freshmen fall
LEO — Jay County had a two-point lead heading into the fourth quarter Monday.
A late score gave Leo the win.
Jay County’s freshman football team fell to 3-3 on the season with an 18-14 loss to the Leo Lions.
Trey Castillo and Daniel Ostrowski both scored touchdowns for the Patriots. Castillo had 58 yards on five carries, and Ostrowski added 23 yards on seven rushes.
Quarterback Gabe Faulkner completed four passes, all of which went to Wyatt Geesaman, for 54 yards.
Thomas Hemmelgarn led the defense with nine total tackles, and Ryan Schlechty had seven.
Fort beats St. John’s
FORT RECOVERY — Clayton Pearson ran for one touchdown and threw for another as the Fort Recovery junior varsity football team beat the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays 22-6.
Like their state-ranked varsity counterparts, the Indians are now 5-0 on the season.
Pearson found Davis Will for a 34-yard touchdown pass, then ran one into the end zone from the 4-yard line. Cashaus Metzger picked off a pass and returned it 49 yards for the Tribe’s third score.
Cade Wendel and Evan Post also had interceptions for the Indians.
Warriors sweep Chiefs
SELMA — East Jay Middle School’s sixth grade volleyball teams lost to the Selma Warriors on Monday.
The A team lost 25-15, 25-7, and the B team fell 25-15, 25-22.
Rayln Chaffins led the A team with two aces on her way to a team-high three points. Jayden Claytor and Madison Dirksen both had two points.
Lindy Mercer, Kyanne Anderson and Dirksen each had a kill for the Chiefs.
Madison Jetmore led the B squad with six service points, three of which were aces. Tricia Ison tallied three and Makaya Champ added one. Kristen Wendel had a pair of kills, with Heidi Cox, Kya Staton and Jetmore each having a kill.
Chiefs fall to Eagles
Rylee Huftel scored the lone touchdown as the East Jay Middle School seventh grade football team lost 38-8 to the Delta Eagles on Saturday.
Huftel scored on a touchdown pass from Landon Grimes, and Bailey Cox ran in the 2-point conversion. Cox carried the ball 10 times for 60 yards.
Cox led the Chiefs with 10 tackles, and Huftel had an interception.
The Chiefs are 3-3 on the season.
FR dominates
UNION CITY, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s eighth grade volleyball team dominated Mississinawa Valley on Saturday.
The Tribe defeated the Blackhawks 25-7, 25-6.
Val Muhlenkamp had four kills to lead the Indians, who improved to 10-1 on the season. Chloe Showalter and Rachel Acheson both added two kills and two assists.
Bailee Tebbe had three assists, and Harlie Dues totaled three digs. Acheson tallied team highs in points (14) and aces (seven).
Tebbe also reached double-digit service points with 10, four of which were aces.
