Power restored
By Sunday morning, electrical service had been restored to nearly 1,200 Jay County residents who lost power Saturday evening because of damage from high winds.
Indiana Michigan Power reported 1,171 Jay County residents, concentrated in the Dunkirk area, were without power late Saturday. The company had more than 16,700 residents without power in total.
False alarm
Portland Fire Department responded at 6:44 a.m. Sunday to a fire alarm at Persimmon Ridge, 4316 200 N. Park St., Portland.
Two trucks and six firefighters arrived on scene at 6:51 a.m. to find the alarm went off because of a faulty detector. They arrived back at the station at 6:55 a.m.
Wal-mart theft
A Wal-Mart employee reported a theft at 9:59 p.m. Friday.
The employee told Portland Police Department there was a man stealing two Blu-ray DVDs from Wal-Mart worth more than $25. A Portland police officer and Wal-Mart employees stopped the suspect and he was arrested.
Robert L. Snow, 46, 906 N. Franklin St., was arrested for theft: receiving stolen property, a Class A misdemeanor. He was booked at 10:30 p.m. into Jay County Jail and is being held there on a $1,000 bond.
Went off road
A Decatur man went off the road in the car he was driving Sunday afternoon in Greene Township.
Derek A. Bayer, 21, 7232 N. 100 East, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was heading southwest on Indiana 67 near the intersection with county road 200 South. Bayer said he saw another vehicle stop at the stop sign to head west on county road 200 South before going through the intersection front of him.
Bayer said he tried to stop, turned right and drove over several large rocks on the side of the road, damaging the 2002 Chrysler Town & County he was driving. The other vehicle did not stop.
The Chrysler is registered to Anita K. Bayer, same address.
Damage in the 5:35 p.m. crash is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Into a ditch
A Warsaw driver’s vehicle went into a ditch Friday evening in Wayne Township.
Kaitlin M. Christenberry, 21, 1215 E. Clark St., told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was heading east on Indiana 26 and attempted to turn onto county road 300 West when she went off the road into a nearby ditch. The 1994 Buick LeSabre she was driving also hit a road sign.
The LeSabre is registered to Sharon D. Christenberry, same address.
Damage in the 10:45 p.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Wallet theft
A Monroe man reported at 3:19 p.m. Saturday that personal items were stolen from him while he was at Jay Community Center, 115 E. Water St., Portland.
Lucas Daniel Everett, 277 N. Van Buren St., told a Portland police officer he left a wallet in a backpack behind the north scorer’s table at the basketball court and it was last seen at 12:30 p.m. He noticed it was gone around 2 p.m.
He had $5 in the wallet, and the total amount of merchandise taken was about $30.
