Evan Mathias got his first crack at collegiate golf.
Mathias, a 2014 Jay County High School graduate, made his debut for the Marian University men’s golf team in the Marian Spring Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Broadmoor Country Club.
Competing as an individual because the Knights had more than five players, Mathias began the two-day tournament with an 8-over 79, six strokes behind the leader, Sean Thomas of Mount Vernon Nazarene.
He had two birdies, one on the par-4 sixth and the other on the par-5 18th.
On the tournament’s second day, Mathias had difficulty staying out of the bunkers and left a few too many putts short of the cup.
He finished with a score of 91.
The Knights won the team title with a two-round total of 601, edging Cardinal Stritch by two strokes. Mount Vernon Nazarene totaled 615 to finish third in the nine-team tournament.
Mathias’ total of 170 was 44th.
