Capsule Reports
Wal-Mart thefts
Employees reported a pair of thefts Saturday at Wal-Mart, 950 W. Votaw St., Portland.
The first report came at 2:45 p.m. and involved a suspect allegedly taking a bottle of cologne. Portland police took the suspect into custody.
Charity L. Boggess, 46, 401 E. Second St., Ridgeville, was arrested for theft by borrowing, a Class A misdemeanor. She was booked at 10:18 p.m. into Jay County Jail and has since been released on a $1,000 bond.
The second report came at 8:02 p.m. and involved a man taking a phone charging cable. The employee reporting the theft said the suspect had left the store and headed east near Crown Pointe, 745 Patriot Drive. Officers located the suspect and arrested him.
Shaylynde Lee Traxler, 25, 8519 E. 600 South, was arrested for theft: receiving stolen property, a Class A misdemeanor. He was booked at 9:06 p.m. into Jay County Jail and was later released on a $1,000 bond.
Went off road
A Michigan driver’s car went off the road Saturday morning in Wayne Township.
Nicholas T. Lobaito, 28, 22949 Masonic Blvd., Saint Clair Shores, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was traveling on U.S. 27 near county road 275 South when he lost control of his 2005 Chevrolet Blazer because of the ice covered road. He went off the west side of the road.
Damage in the 7:28 a.m. crash is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Utility pole strike
A Dunkirk teen crashed into a pole in the car she was driving Saturday afternoon in Knox Township.
Kaelyn D. Weaver, 16, 10037 W. 200 South, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was traveling south on county road 1100 West near county road 300 South when the 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier she was driving began to slide on the loose stone. She said she was unable to gain control of the car and went off the road striking a utility pole.
The Cavalier is registered to Lori L. Moon, same address.
Damage in the 3:40 p.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Went off road
A Portland man’s SUV went off the road Saturday morning in Bearcreek Township.
Dennis N. Emery, 38, 7424 S. 300 East, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was heading south on U.S. 27 near county road 500 North when he came to a part of the road that was covered with ice. He said he lost control of his 1999 Nissan Pathfinder and the vehicle went off to the east side of the road.
Damage in the 7:19 a.m. crash is estimated to be less than $1,000.
Truck struck
An Albany man’s vehicle struck the rear of a Portland woman’s truck Saturday morning at the intersection of U.S. 27 and county road 100 North in Wayne Township.
Edward E. Townsend, 79, 9790 Sharpbend Road, Albany, told a Portland police officer he was unable to stop his 2010 Dodge Dakota from striking the back of the truck in front of him while he was driving north on U.S. 27.
Kileigh L. Derrikson, 26, 1673 W. 100 North, said she was turning left onto county road 100 North but was unable to get traction in her 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and was hit by the Dakota.
Damage in the 6:35 a.m. crash is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
Rear-end crash
Two Berne drivers were involved in a rear-end crash Saturday at the intersection of U.S. 27 and Industrial Drive in Portland.
Chelsea R. Taylor, 23, 1365 Colonial Court, told a Portland police officer she was facing south on U.S. 27 and was stopped at a traffic signal when her 2009 Ford Flex was struck in the rear.
Robert W. Miller, 55, 2291 W. Indiana 218, said he was traveling south and attempted to stop but began sliding on the road and hit the Flex with his 2001 Buick LeSabre.
Damage in the 7:17 a.m. crash is estimated to be less than $1,000.
