Field events carry Patriots in win
Jay girls sweep throwing, jumping events to beat sectional foes
Often, the athletes who don’t run on the track get overlooked.
It was those four events that gave the Patriots an important win against sectional opponents.
Jay County High School’s girls track team swept the field events Thursday, finishing first in a three-team meet with the Yorktown Tigers and Delta Eagles.
“One of our goals is to (outscore) the other team in field events,” said JCHS coach Brian McEvoy, who said he challenged his throwers, long jumpers and high jumpers after underperforming on Tuesday. “If we’re going to be successful we have to get field events. We came out tonight and got all four of them.”
Those four victories, as well as wins in the 100-meter hurdles, the 800 and 1,600 runs helped Jay County score 73 points to finish ahead of Yorktown by five. Delta scored 15 points for third.
“I thought we gave a lot better effort tonight than what we gave on Tuesday,” McEvoy said. The Patriots finished second to South Adams but beat Adams Central on Tuesday in Monroe. “It is a good win for sure and hopefully it is a building block.”
Jay County’s boys claimed victories in two events and were third as a team with 32 points. Yorktown scored 70 points for first, and Delta was third with 54.
The Patriot girls earned three of the top four spots in the discus, led by Taylor Muhlenkamp’s distance of 90 feet, 6 inches. Kyndal Miller (89 feet) and Gwen Omstead (82 feet, 4 inches) were third and fourth respectively.
Those nine points secured the meet victory, taking some pressure off the Patriots’ 4x400 relay team, which finished second in the final event of the night.
Rebekah Corwin and Omstead were first and third respectively in the shot put. Corwin won with a distance of 31 feet, 2 inches, and Omstead’s best was 27 feet, 4 inches.
Behind the effort of Audrey Shreve, Kendal Garringer and Taylor Homan, Jay County was first, second and fourth in high jump. Shreve cleared 4 feet, 10 inches, while the best for Garringer and Homan was 2 inches shorter.
Lucy Laux, who was also third in the 200 dash, won the long jump with her distance of 14 feet, 3 inches.
Also earning victories for the JCHS girls were Britlyn Dues (100 hurdles – 18.04 seconds), Kendra Muhlenkamp (1,600 run – 5 minutes, 57 seconds) and Erika Kunkler (800 run – 2:38).
In the 1,600, Muhlenkamp was out front after the first lap, but fell to second behind senior teammate Megan Wellman. With 250 meters to go, Muhlenkamp passed the defending sectional champion and held off a push from a Delta runner for the win. Wellman finished fourth.
“Kendra has been really big for us this year,” McEvoy said. “We are asking her to do a lot of things as a freshmen that most freshmen couldn’t handle. She has done a really good job, she’s ran smart she works hard and she stays poised. That’s the big thing.
“We’ve given her a tremendous workload this week. She’s really shined. She’s going to have a really successful year.”
Kunkler and Muhlenkamp were one-two in the 800, and McEvoy said those eight points gave his team a little bit of a cushion, something it wasn’t able to do last year during sectional when Jay County had its streak of five straight sectional titles snapped as Yorktown claimed the crown.
“Anytime you go one-two, it zaps the point possibility for the other teams away,” he said. “It’s just a dagger at times. That was really what we needed at that point in time.”
Andrew Trewyn and Tyler Leonhard earned the only two victories for the JCHS boys. Leonhard’s distance of 37 feet, 5 inches, was nearly 8 inches further than the rest of the field. Trewyn, who was competing in the high jump outdoors for the first time this season, successfully cleared 6 feet, 4 inches. It was 1 inch shorter than his career best that he set during the indoor season.
“Seems like (Trewyn is) improving each week,” said Kurt Hess, the Jay County boys coach. “Just hoping for big things for him come sectional and conference.”
