Entering this season, Kyler Hudson’s career best score for a nine-hole round was 39.
Not anymore.
Hudson, a Jay County High School junior, shot a 38 Thursday for a new career-low score, helping the Patriot boys golf team to a 167-171 victory over the sectional rival Wapahani Raiders at Portland Golf Club.
It was the first match of the year for Jay County (1-0), which had its season-opening tournament Saturday at Yorktown canceled because of inclement weather.
Collin Haines was second on the team with a 40, lowering the previous career-best mark he set June 12 by three strokes.
Junior Jay Houck carded a 44 to place third on the team, and Graham Haines rounded out the Patriots’ team score with a 45.
Nick Hayden also competed, and he finished with a 53.
Tigers top Patriots
Jay County’s girls tennis team dropped its Allen County Athletic Conference opener Thursday, losing 3-2 to the Bluffton Tigers.
The Patriots (1-1, 0-1 ACAC) got their only two wins from singles players. Senior Kyra Braun defeated Madison Hellar 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 at No. 1 singles, and No. 3 singles player Megan Johnson defeated Kristen Bennett with little resistance, 6-2, 6-0.
As individuals, Braun and Johnson move to 2-0 on the year.
At No. 2 singles, Shelby McClain (1-1) lost to Hannah Gerber 6-2, 6-4.
Jay County’s No. 1 doubles team of Abby Reier and Abby Saxman (0-2) dropped their match 6-2, 7-5 to Sara Baumgartner and Claudia Williams. At No. 2 singles, cousins Audrey and Kayla Dirksen (1-1) lost to Lexi Ramseyer and Kendal Mechling 6-1, 6-2.
Jay County’s junior varsity team won 5-2. Francine Muhlenkamp and Katy Hamilton won their singles matches. Emily Reier and Besty Muhlenkamp teamed for a doubles victory, as did Kristy Alig and Kaitlyn Ruiz.
JC baseball loses
SELMA — The Jay County baseball team was on the wrong end of a run-rule decision Thursday, losing to the host Wapahani Raiders 13-3 in five innings.
The Patriots (1-1) struck early with a run in the top of the first inning, but the Raiders scored three runs in the second to take the lead for good. Wapahani tacked on one more run in the third and three in the fourth to go ahead 7-1.
Jay County responded with two in the top of the fifth, but Wapahani put up a half dozen in the bottom of the frame for the run-rule win.
Junior Jacob Geesaman, who blasted his first career grand slam on Tuesday, recorded the only two hits for the Patriots. He was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. His freshman brother Wyatt also had a hit; so too did freshman Ryan Schlechty.
Jake Myers (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up four runs — two earned — in four innings while striking out three and walking three.
Eagles top Patriots
MUNCIE — Jay County’s softball team fell to 0-3 on the season Thursday with a 16-6 loss in five innings to the Delta Eagles.
The Patriots had a brief lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. But the Eagles answered with six runs in the second and third frames for a 12-4 advantage.
After Delta added a run in the fourth inning, Jay County cut the deficit to 13-6 with a pair of runs in the fifth. The home team completed the run-rule victory with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Gwen Butcher suffered the loss, giving up 12 runs on nine hits in three innings. McKayla Norris pitched the final two frames, allowing four runs on four hits.
Gabby Hart and Kady Finnerty each had a double and a single for Jay County. Catera Gierhart and Emily Corn both had a pair of singles as well, with Gierhart driving in two runs.
JV softball falls
MUNCIE — Despite holding a 10-8 advantage in hits, Jay County’s junior varsity softball team fell to the Delta Eagles on Thursday, 6-5.
Jay County jumped on the host Eagles early, scoring two runs in the first inning.
Delta tied the score with a run in each of the second and third innings, until the Patriots re-took the lead, 5-3 after three innings.
Delta nabbed the advantage again behind a three-run fifth inning, and kept the Patriots at bay the rest of the way.
Shelby Caldwell paced the Patriots at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. She also had a pair of stolen bases.
Olivia Cochran chipped in with a pair of hits and two RBIs.
