Celebrate by showing giving spirit
Editorial
Tonight Jay County High School juniors and seniors and their dates will get dressed up.
There will be sharp tuxedos and glittery dresses of all varieties. Some duct tape couture might make an appearance.
The students will have dinner together. They’ll pose for so many pictures their faces will start to hurt. Some might even rent limousines for the occasion.
Prom is a fun event — fun for the teenagers who will dance the night away and fun for the family and friends who will watch them parade into the gym in the fanciest outfits they’re likely to wear with the exception of their wedding day. And it should be.
But while we’re having a good time, we should remember that there are those in our community who can’t afford to think about fancy clothes, expensive meals and flashy cars. Some have to worry about where they will get their next meal.
Now in its fifth year, Promen-Aid offers the opportunity to mix some philanthropy with the fun.
Staff members from The Commercial Review will be stationed at the edge of the JCHS parking lot and just inside the gym doors to collect donations of non-perishable food as well as money. Some of the items of greatest need are canned fruits and vegetables, boxed cereal and peanut butter. Everything collected will be delivered Monday to Portland’s Helping Hand Food Bank.
During its inaugural year, you donated more than 500 food items and $500. Since then, prom-goers have continued to show their generosity.
It’s a pattern we want to keep going for years to come.
So stop at the store this afternoon and pick up a bag full of items. Or just grab a can or a box as you head out the door on your way to the high school.
All donations, no matter how large or small, are appreciated.
Tonight is the beginning of a time of celebration for our students, to be followed soon by Honors Night and later graduation. Everyone should enjoy themselves. But at the same time, let’s show, once again, the caring and compassion that make this community a great place to live. — R.C.
