Jay Co. wins on Myer's no-hitter
Local roundup
Jake Myers’ chance at a perfect game was gone in the third inning.
He never lost his no-hitter.
Myers, a Jay County High School junior, threw a no-hitter Friday in a 4-0 victory against the Woodlan Warriors baseball team in the Allen County Athletic Conference opener for both squads.
The right-hander retired the first six batters before allowing a leadoff walk in the third inning to Alec Bayman, who was then thrown out on a brother-to-brother connection — junior catcher Jacob Geesaman to freshman Wyatt at second base. Bayman walked again in the sixth inning, and the Patriots turned a double play to end any real threat. Myers gave up a two-out walk in the top of the seventh, but fielded a ground ball for the game’s final out.
It was the first no-hitter for Jay County since coach Lea Selvey’s son Kyle no-hit the Winchester Golden Falcons almost three years ago to the day — April 20, 2013 — for the coach’s 400th career win.
Myers struck out seven and walked three on only 78 pitches, and threw first-pitch strikes to 18 of the 22 batters he faced — one over the minimum.
Jay County (4-3, 1-0 ACAC) scored all four of its runs during the fourth inning. Cole Stigleman scored on an error, and then Ethan Myers hit an RBI infield single. Chandler Jacks made it 3-0 JCHS on a double steal with Myers, and Wyatt Geesaman drove in Myers with a double to center.
