BERNE — The Starfires had a strong start offensively.
Their defense was able to keep damage to a minimum.
The South Adams High School baseball team scored three runs in the first and third innings and kept Minster to one run each in three innings in a 6-3 victory on Monday.
South Adams (3-3) jumped to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Minster scored a run in the top of the third inning, but the Starfires answered with another three spot in the home half of the frame. Minster then added a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, but wasn’t able to get any closer.
Corbin Blomeke had a double, two RBIs and two runs, and Isaiah Baumgartner added a single and two RBIs to help lead the Starfires. Marcus Teeter had a single and an RBI, and Justin Nussbaum ripped a double. Joe Stuber, Jayden Dull and Mark Clary each added singles.
Nussbaum also got the win on the mound. He gave up three runs — two earned — on six hits. He struck out eight and walked three in seven complete innings.
Jay golfers first
FARMLAND — Jay County’s boys golf team finished first in a three-team match with Monroe Central and Winchester on Monday at Hickory Hills Golf Club.
Jay County had all four of its scoring players card 46 or lower in totaling 172. Monroe Central was second with 214 and Winchester was two strokes behind.
Junior Jay Houck led the Patriots with a 41, and senior Graham Haines was one stroke behind him with a 42. Junior Kyler Hudson shot a 43, and sophomore Collin Haines completed the team score with a 46.
Nick Hayden also competed, and he shot a 52.
SA tops Cavs
BERNE — The South Adams softball team pushed its winning streak to four games Monday with a 14-9 victory against the Coldwater Cavaliers.
The Starfires (7-3) took a 1-0 advantage after the first inning, then broke the game open with a five-run second.
Coldwater got one back in the top of the third, but South Adams responded with another five-run inning to lead 11-1.
A six-run top half of the fifth got the Cavaliers within striking distance, 11-7, but the Starfires added one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to create separation.
Morgan Alberson had a double, a single and two RBIs and two runs to lead the SAHS offense. Cassi Evans had a double, a single and two runs, and Kayla LeFever tallied a double to go with her two runs scored.
Shania Neal and Isabella Ramirez each had two hits, and Keirstyn Grimm scored three times.
Katelin Augsburger earned the win, giving up three earned runs on seven hits while striking out six in five innings.
Tribe in top 10
COLUMBUS — Fort Recovery is back in the rankings.
In the first Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association poll released Monday, the Fort Recovery Indians debuted at No. 9.
The Indians (10-4), received one vote for fourth place and two votes for fifth, and totaled 70 points, 19 ahead of Midwest Athletic Conference foe St. Henry. MAC opponent Minster finished 11th in the voting with 41 points.
Top-ranked Toronto received 20 first-place votes for 245 points. Riverside is second with 175, and St. Paul is third with 124. Notre Dame (111) is ranked fourth, defending state champion Newark Catholic (103) is fifth, and Fisher Catholic (100) is sixth. New Miami (90) and Jackson-Milton (76) are seventh and eighth, respectively.
Coldwater, which the Indians host at 5 p.m. tonight, debuted at No. 3 in Division III.
