BLUFFTON — For the second time in as many days, the Starfires beat a conference opponent.
The South Adams High School girls tennis team, which defeated Jay County on Monday, moved to 2-0 in Allen County Athletic Conference play with a 4-1 victory over the Bluffton Tigers on Tuesday.
At No. 1 doubles, seniors Riley Liechty and Kylea Pierce won the first set against Sarah Baumgartner and Claudia Williams 6-2, before dropping the second 7-5.
They rallied to take they third set 6-1 for the victory.
Julia Grabau and Caralie Farlow beat Lexi Ramseyer and Maranda Craighead 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles
Brittany Potts, the Starfires’ No. 1 singles player, defeated Madison Heller 6-3, 6-0, and Haley Gerber knocked off Kendall Mechling 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Breanna Potts lost at No. 2 singles to Hannah Gerber 6-2, 6-2.
South Adams moves to 6-3 on the season, and meets Adams Central at 5 p.m. tonight for the outright conference championship.

Track sweeps SW
BERNE — The South Adams boys and girls track teams both defeated the Southern Wells Raiders on Tuesday.
The boys won 75-48, and the girls claimed an 83-40 victory.
Bailey McIntire and Drew LeFever combined for five of the SAHS boys’ six victories. McIntire earned wins in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. He had a time of 2 minutes, 17 seconds, in the 800, 5:02 in the 800 and 11:35 in the 3,200. LeFever won both the 100 and 200 dashes in 11.8 and 24.2 seconds respectively.
Paul Neuenschwander earned the other victory, taking the 400 dash in 56.3 seconds.

Olivia Von Gunten, Caroline Kloepper and Addie Wanner each won two events for the Starfire girls. Wanner was first in the 100 hurdles (16.1) and high jump (5 feet), Kloepper won the 100 (13.4) and 200 (27.6) sprints, with Von Gunten taking first place in the 1,600 (5:55) and 3.200 (12:49).
Also earning wins were Eliza Harruff (800 – 2:50) and Megan Wynn (300 hurdles – 53.9).

Patriots rally
BERNE — The Heritage Patriots scored four runs in the top of the seventh to beat the South Adams baseball team 5-4 on Tuesday.
South Adams (6-7, 1-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) scored a run in the first inning and doubled its lead with a run in the fourth. After Heritage scored a run in the top of the sixth inning, the Starfires pushed their lead to 4-1 with two runs in the bottom of the frame. But, Heritage rallied to take a 5-4 lead with in the seventh and kept the home team off the scoreboard to hand the Starfires their first conference loss of the season.
Braxton Haight was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk for the Starfires. Justin Nussbaum had a double, a single, a walk, two RBIs and two runs.
Isaiah Baumgartner took the loss, giving up one unearned run and a walk in one inning of relief.

Softball fall
BERNE — A six-run sixth inning gave the Heritage Patriots a 9-3 victory over the South Adams softball team on Tuesday.
South Adams (7-4, 1-1 ACAC) trailed 2-1 after the third inning, but scored two runs in the fourth for a 3-1 advantage. The Patriots tied the game with a run in the fifth frame before breaking the game open with a half dozen in the sixth.
Madison Morgan was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Morgan Alberson had two hits, including a triple, and scored once. Isabella Ramirez also had two hits.
Katelin Augsburger suffered the loss. She gave up nine runs — three earned — on seven hits. She struck out five and walked five.
