ELWOOD — A big second inning proved too much for the Jay County High School softball team in a 17-4 loss to the Elwood Panthers on Wednesday.
Elwood, which is ranked fourth in Class 2A, scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and added nine in the second for a quick 11-0 lead. The Panthers added five more in the third before Jay County (0-8) finally broke through with four runs in the fourth inning.
Freshman Kensey Litton and sophomore Emily Corn both had two hits for the Patriots. Catera Gierhart, a junior, had a hit and drove in two runs. Kady Finnerty and Gabby Hart each had a hit.
Gwen Butcher pitched for the Patriots, and she suffered the loss.
Jay County plays its second ranked opponent in as many days tonight when it travels to take on Class 2A No. 9 Adams Central at 5 p.m. The Patriots then meet Lapel, which finished 18th in the most recent poll, at 10 a.m. Saturday.
EJ girls tie
East Jay Middle School’s girls track team tied Delta on Wednesday at Jay County High School.
The Chief girls won seven events in their 50-50 tie, and the boys claimed one first-place finish in a 65-35 loss.
Miranda Alig and Kassidy Fennig were both dual winners for the Chiefs. Alig was first in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs. Fennig won both shot put and discus. Ashlyn Dow (400 dash) and Natalie Miles (high jump) also earned individual victories.
Cheyenne Liette, Grace Saxman, Miles and Dow combined for a victory in the 4x400 relay.
Logan Duran, Chandler Bush, Dylan Knapschafer and Braden McIntire combined for a victory in the 4x400 relay for the EJMS boys.
In the reserve meet, the East Jay boys won 56-44. Juan Pablo Wiggins (shot put, discus), Seth LeMaster (long jump), MaCuly LeMaster (high jump) and Knapschafer (100 hurdles) each won their respective events.
The Chief girls lost 55-43 in their reserve meet. Lillian Schmit (800 run), Barbara LeMaster (shot put, discus) and Kylie Klopfenstein (long jump) earned individual victories.
Sara Hemmelgarn, Pacie Denney, Kaitlyn Morningstar and Abby Elzey teamed for a victory in the 4x100 relay.
