LifeStream to offer balance classes at JCC

LifeStream Services is offering a series of classes for seniors concerned about falling and who want to improve balance and strength.
A Matter of Balance classes are designed for community-dwelling older adults who are concerned about falls, have sustained falls in the past, restrict activities because of concerns about falling and to improve flexibility, balance and strength.
Classes will begin Wednesday, September 7, and continue each Wednesday for eight weeks at Jay Community Center, 115 E. Water St. in Portland. They will be held from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m.

Open house
An open house will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at Jay County Historical Society Museum, 903 E. Main St. in Portland.
Hand-blown glassware made by Monte Dunlavy, Jay County advertising fans and thermometers from the collection of Cheryl Martin Myers and Pennville memorabilia from Daniel Denhart-Lillard will be on display.
Cooking class
A series of free healthy cooking and exercise classes will be offered each month for seniors 55 and older.
The next class will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 12 at the Arthur and Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion at Swiss Village in Berne.

Book sale
Friends of the Jay County Public Library will have its annual used book sale this month at the library at 315 N. Ship St. in Portland.
The sale will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 24 for Friends members only.
It will continue from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, and Friday, Aug. 26, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 27.
Donations of books, music, movies, recent magazines, puzzles and games will be accepted from Monday, Aug. 22 through 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24 in the library Community Room.
The Hook & Needle Club will meet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 23, and Writers Guild will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 29.
