Fatal accident
Two Portland residents and a Geneva man were involved in a fatal accident that killed an Ohio teenager Tuesday evening in Darke County.
The accident occurred at U.S. 127 and Kruckeberg Road shortly after 5 p.m. Samuel Wengerd, 28, Geneva, was northbound on U.S. 127 in a Ford F-350 when the vehicle struck an SUV attempting to travel west across the U.S. highway.
Elias Burr, 16, Greenville, Ohio, was driving the SUV and died at the scene as a result of the collision. Wengard was treated for injuries at the scene.
There were two passengers in each vehicle. Burr’s brothers, 7 and 9 years old, were in the SUV and were taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital. In Wengerd’s truck were Jacob and Marvin Schwartz, ages 19 and 21, Portland. They were treated at Wayne Healthcare for injuries and have since been released.

U-turn collision
A Wisconsin man struck a Muncie woman’s car with his semi truck Tuesday while making a U-turn at Indiana 67 South and county road 75 South.
Timothy J. Muzich, 60, W121123 Lakeview Drive, Sullivan, Wisconsin, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was making a U-turn to get to Tyson Mexican Original, which is located on Tyson Road. Teresa M. Foy, 40, 1101 W. 10th St., Muncie, said she was going north on Indiana 67 when Muzich’s truck hit her car.
Muzich was driving a 2005 Peterbilt Motors semi truck, registered to Zeller Trucking Inc., 1615 Innovation Way, Hartford, Wisconsin. Foy was driving a 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, registered to Davis Mail Service, 8712 E. Liberty Drive, Selma.
Damage in the 3:43 p.m. accident is estimated to be between $1,000 and $2,500.

Vehicle rolls
A rural Portland man’s pickup truck ran off the road and rolled when he fell asleep early this morning near Salamonia.
Kevin W. Ranly, 28, 1567 N. 800 East, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was traveling east on Indiana 26 near county road 100 South when he fell asleep. His truck crossed the centerline, ran off the road and rolled.
Ranly was driving his 2003 Dodge Ram.
Total damage in the 5:30 a.m. accident is estimated to be between $10,00 and $25,000.

Went off road

A rural Portland man’s pickup truck went off the road and struck a utility pole Wednesday after he swerved to avoid hitting a dog on county road 400 South.
Michael J. Beitler, 39, 2988 S. U.S. 27, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was driving east on county road 400 South near county road 200 West when he swerved to avoid a dog that crossed in front of his truck. His 2003 Dodge Dakota went off the road and hit a utility pole.
Total damage in the 5:43 p.m. accident is estimated to be between $2,500 and $5,000.

Failure to yield
Two cars collided Wednesday night after a Portland man failed to yield at the intersection of U.S. 27 north and Arch Street.
Webb D. Stephenson, 56, 951 W. Water St., told police he didn’t see any cars coming when he attempted to cross U.S. 27. Daniel A. Walter, 22, 842 N. 500 W., Portland, was driving north on U.S. 27 and hit the right rear end of Stephenson’s car. Walter told police he had looked away from the road and saw Stephenson’s car when he looked back, but was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision.
Stephenson was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Impala, registered to Nina M. Stephenson, same address as driver. Walter was driving a 2000 Jeep Cherokee, registered to Sally A. Walter, 1367 Meadow Lane, Portland.
Total damage in the 11:03 p.m. accident is estimated to be between $2,500 and $5,000.

Cash theft
A resident at Crown Pointe, 745 Patriot Drive, Portland, reported that $300 was stolen from her wallet inside her room.
The theft occurred at the assisted living community between July 29 and August 2. The same resident, Norma Puckett, is involved in an earlier theft case that involved someone stealing and using her credit card.
Portland Police Department is investigating both cases.

Mower theft
A lawnmower was reported stolen Wednesday after its owner unloaded it and stepped away.
The theft occurred at 424 W. High St., Portland. The owner told police she unloaded the mower and stepped inside for a few minutes. When she returned, it was gone.
The mower is worth about $100. It was taken about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
