Taking Note
A new Portland Citizens Police Academy class is set to begin.
The Portland Police Department is accepting applications for anyone interested in attending the classes. They will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each Thursday, beginning Sept. 8 and continuing through Oct. 27. One class will be held on a Saturday morning. Those who are ages 16 and 17 must attend the classes with a family member or guardian.
The academy increases public’s awareness and understanding about the daily functions of the police department and will cover drug awareness, the K-9 unit, D.A.R.E., firearms, a tour of the Jay County Jail and more.
Applications are available at the Portland Police Department and the application deadline is Sept. 1. For more information, call Chief Nathan Springer at (260) 726-7161.
Geneva festival
The annual Summers End Street Festival will be held Saturday in downtown Geneva.
Activities include a cornhole tournament, which will be held from 1 to 5 p.m., and a kid’s carnival from 2 to 8 p.m.
Entertainment begins at 6 p.m. with The Beatles Lab Band performing and The Bulldogs from 7 to 11 p.m.
Farm, Garden Expo
The Rural America Farm & Garden Expo will be held Sept. 7 through 9 at the Jay County Fairgrounds.
A farmer’s market is the latest addition to the event.
Any vendors interested in selling vegetables, fresh fruit, baked goods, canned goods or fall decor are invited to sell their wares at the expo.
Registration forms are available at the Jay Count Chamber of Commerce, 118 S. Meridian St. in Portland or by calling the office at (260) 726-4481, Michael Peterson at (260) 703-0446 or John Young at (260)?726-2565.
Awards celebration
Jay-Randolph Developmental Services will have its annual Awards Celebration on Sept. 22, at Jay County High School with the theme “Celebrating Client Masterpieces.”
Reservations for the event are due by Sept. 9. For more information, call Traci Gross at (260) 726-7931.
Food, shelter funds
Jay County has been awarded $3,800 through the Emergency Food and Shelter Program that is available to local non-profit and government units that provide food and shelter programs.
Organizations interested in applying for funding should call Jane Ann Runyon at United Way of Jay County at (260) 726-7010 for an application.
Honoring flag
The Daughters of the American Revolution are celebrating Indiana’s Bicentennial with the contest “Create a salute to our state flag.”
Compositions should honor the flag and reflecting Hoosier spirit.
