Students chosen for academy

Taking Note

Two Jay County High School students have been chosen to attend the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities in Muncie.
Lindsey Ayala and Jason Minnich will attend their junior and senior years at the school, located on the campus of Ball State University.
Admission to the academy is based on academic performance, essays, test scores and recommendations. Ayala and Minnich will attend school with other gifted students throughout Indiana and 16 international honors students.

Senior games
The second annual Jay County Golden Games will be held in October.
Jay Community Center, Jay County Hospital, Jay County Public Library, John Jay Center for Learning, LifeStream Services and Persimmon Ridge are teaming up as Golden Game coordinators.
The competitive activities are intended to improve or test the mind, body and spirit of the individual and will take place Oct. 3 through 7 for those 55 and older.
Some of the activities will include corn hold, bowling, pickle ball, euchre, checkers, a coloring contest, spelling bee, jacks, Drives & Putts, Name That Tune and a one-mile dash. Medals will be given.
Registration forms are available at Jay Community Center, Jay County Hospital, Jay County Public Library and John Jay Center for Learning. The cost is $15 and will include lunch and a t-shirt.

Art exhibit
The works of J.T. Thompson will be on display Sept. 2 through 30 at Arts Place, 131 E. Walnut St. in Portland. The exhibit is titled “Labyrinth of Illusion.”
Thompson studied painting at the Columbus College of Art and Design and works at the 64 Parsons St. Underground 64 Studio in Columbus.

Grief group
As part of its en COURAGE program, State of the Heart is offering a grief support group for those who have love a friend or family member.
The free sessions for adults will held from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays, beginning Sept. 14 and continuing through Oct. 19, at the Portland office at 1237 W. Indiana 67.
During the group sessions, participants are encouraged to listen and share with others as the grief specialist guides and serves as a companion.

Fort blood drive
The Indiana/Ohio Region Blood Services of the American Red Cross held a blood drive on Aug. 1 at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Fort Recovery.
There were 109 units collected at the drive.
Another blood drive will be held from noon until 6 p.m. on Sept. 26 at the American Legion hall in Fort Recovery.
