CELINA, Ohio — Bailey McIntire was on his way to victory from the first 100 meters.
It wasn’t until the home stretch that Kallee Patch earned her win.
McIntire, a South Adams High School senior, and Patch, freshman, won their respective races Saturday during the Celina Rotary Cross Country Invitational at Wright State University’s Lake Campus, giving the Starfires a individual sweep of the White division.
Patch led the charge of a one-two finish for the South Adams girls, who won the team title with 32 points. St. Henry was runner up with 43, and Fort Loramie scored 110 to place third.
Fort Recovery finished fifth with 129 points. Jay County’s girls did not qualify for a team score.
McIntire, who was 11th in the state last year, helped the SAHS boys finish fourth with 112 points. Fort Loramie (37), Parkway (65) and St. Henry (68) were first, second and third respectively. Fort Recovery totaled 172 points for seventh.
Jay County’s boys placed seventh in the Green division, totaling 191 points. Bellmont was the team champion with 26 points, ahead of New Haven (78) and host Celina (81).
Patch trailed teammate Olivia Von Gunten, Kelsey Broering of Marion Local and Lauren Hemmelgarn of St. Henry for a majority of the race. Von Gunten and Broering took the early lead after 100 meters, and they ran hip-to-hip for the next 2 miles.
Broering, a freshman, fell back to fourth while Patch slowly gained on Hemmelgarn.
Then, as they made the left-handed turn and through the inflatable Celina Bulldog tunnel, Patch kicked into another gear, passing Hemmelgarn with only Von Gunten ahead of her.
Sprinting the final 20 meters, Patch overtook Von Gunten to earn her first career victory by eight tenths of a second in 21 minutes, 15.1 seconds.
SAHS senior Kara Seffernick placed sixth in 21:58.9 while Eliza Harruff (22:17) and Olivia Mason (22:17.1) were 11th and 12th respectively to secure the team win for the Starfires.
McIntire, on the other hand, took control of his race as quickly as possible. He sprinted to the front, making the first right-handed turn with the other 127 runners behind him.
“I waited for the first mile to see if anyone would challenge,” he said.
But no one did. As he passed the 1- and 2-mile marks, all he did was create more separation from the rest of the field.
“I felt like I kind of settled in a little bit,” said McIntire. “It may not have been the best thing but it worked for this race.”
And the senior was pleased for such a dominating run for a victory in back-to-back seasons.
“It feels good to defend it,” he said. He won with a time of 16 minutes, 16.8 seconds, more than a minute ahead of Fort Loramie’s Jake Rethman, who finished in 17:26.1. “With the course changing every year it is exciting to see what they are going to come up with next.”
Rounding out the team score for the SAHS boys were Wyatt Miller (17th – 18:52.5), Victor Vasquez (22nd – 19:39), Trey Lehman (35th – 20:32.7) and Luke Gerber (45th – 21:08.6).
