Tennis drops to 0-6 on the year after three losses in Muncie
MUNCIE — The Patriots are still searching for their first victory of the season.
Jay County High School’s boys tennis team lost all three of its matches in the Muncie Central Invitational.
The tournament began on Saturday and was postponed to Monday because of weather.
Jay County’s strongest performance of the tournament was Saturday, a 3-2 loss to the Blackford Bruins. Conner Benter won his third match of the season at No. 3 singles, defeating Austin Martin 7-5, 6-3. At No. 1 doubles, seniors Luke Weaver and Kyler Hudson dropped the first set 6-4 to Zach Tarr and Evan Jennerjahn before rallying to take the next one 6-2. They won the tiebreaker 10-3.
At No. 1 singles, Garrett Rodgers lost to Scott Thompson 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, Payton Heniser dropped his No. 2 singles match to Kerigan Reynard 6-3, 6-1, and the No. 2 doubles team of Ben Muhlenkamp and Xavier Ninde lost to Austin Collett and Adrian Reidy 6-3, 6-2.
Hoping to bounce back on Monday, Jay County was shut out by both Muncie Central and Mount Vernon (Fortville), 5-0.
Rodgers dropped his match to Muncie Central’s Khamasi Muhiga 6-0, 6-0, while Heniser fell to Erich Ong 6-0, 6-2. Nik Schmaltz defeated Benter 6-2, 6-1.
Weaver and Hudson put up a fight against Griffin Hill and Brock McCoy, but lost 7-5, 7-6 (7-3). At No. 2 singles, Sheldon Upp and Ninde fell to Brody McCoy and Charlie Hammock 6-1, 6-1.
Against Mount Vernon, Rodgers won the first set but fell to Wilkin Baldwin 3-6, 6-3, 10-3. Matt McCullough defeated Heniser 6-1, 6-2, and Conner Benter fell 6-0, 6-1 to Brandon Pratt.
Gavin Stamper and Sam Frye defeated Weaver and Hudson 6-1, 7-5, and at No. 2 doubles Ninde teamed up with Calvin Whitney but lost to Peyton Meadors and JD Lohee 6-0, 6-1.
Jay County fell to 0-6 on the season.
