It’s been a back and forth year for the Patriots.
Tuesday, they went forward.
The Jay County High School girls golf team moved back above .500, finishing first in a three-team match against Fort Recovery and Winchester at Portland Golf Club.
Jay County (6-5) shot a 214, edging Winchester by one stroke. Fort Recovery totaled 225 for third.
Kendra Dodd, a JCHS senior, led the Patriots with a 49, marking the third time this season she’s broken 50. Madison Brown turned in the No. 2 score for the Patriots with a 54. Carlie Wickey was one stroke behind her with a 55, and Cassie Reno completed the Jay County team score with a 56.
Kristen Keller shot a team-best 52 for Fort Recovery. Elli Keller was second on the team with a 55, and Emily Bruns shot a 56 for third. Eryn Litmer was the No. 4 golfer, and she shot a 62.
Also competing for Jay County was Madalyn Garringer (64), and for Fort Recovery was Sophie Timmerman (64).
Spikers fall
ROCKFORD, Ohio — The South Adams volleyball team fell to the host Parkway Panthers on Tuesday, 26-28, 25-14, 25-23, 25-22.
Celebrating her 18th birthday, SAHS senior Morgan Alberson had a team-high 12 kills to go with her dozen digs. Jade Farlow was close behind with nine kills, with Caralie Farlow and Addie Wanner adding five kills each.
Shania Neal totaled 39 digs, with Julia Grabau adding 37 assists. Caralie Farlow added 17 digs defensively for the Starfires (7-3).
South Adam’s junior varsity team also lost, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23. Lydia Loshe had eight kills, eight digs and seven assists, while Hannah Dull and Esther Troyer had 14 digs apiece.
The Starfire freshman weren’t able to win either, dropping their match 25-17, 25-14. Alivia Bergman had four kills and eight digs, and Sidney Schwartz tallied six assists and four digs.
SA girls win
BERNE — The South Adams girls cross country team took three of the top five spots Tuesday, winning the Bi-County Conditioner meet it hosted.
The boys race did not get underway because of lightning.
South Adams scored 12 points for the victory. Norwell was second with 17, and Bellmont finished third with 27.
Ran in a relay format, SAHS junior Olivia Von Gunten and freshman Kallee Patch led the Starfires by finishing third overall with a combined time of 38 minutes, 38.5 seconds.
Kara Seffernick and Eliza Harruff ran to a time of 41:00.2 for fourth place, and Hadi Hawbaker joined Isabel Von Gunten finished fifth in 41:26.7.
Also competing for the Starfires were the teams of Acacia Anderson and Olivia Mason (42:31.6) and Calyssa Lehman and Makinzi Peace (44:46.6).
Chiefs top Tigers
East Jay Middle School’s eighth grade football team opened its season Tuesday with a 13-0 victory over Bluffton in a weather-shortened game.
The Chief seventh graders lost, 20-6.
Bailey Cox had touchdown runs of 10 and 15 yards to pace the offense for the eighth graders (1-0, 1-0 Allen County Athletic Conference). Clark Muhlenkamp also ran in a 2-point conversion.
Landon Grimes picked off a pass in the second quarter, and the Chief defense held the visiting Tigers to just two first downs.
East Jay’s seventh grade squad (0-1, 0-1 ACAC) got its only score from Tarron Bentz, who finished with 40 rushing yards and a touchdown. Blayne Daniels had a 20-yard completion to Dylan Knapschaefer, and Shawn Fisher caught a 35-yard pass from Dawson Hundley.
Stars blank Raiders
PONETO — The South Adams Middle School football teams both shut out the host Southern Wells Raiders on Tuesday.
The seventh grade Starfires won 26-0, and the eighth graders defeated the Raiders 34-0 in a game shortened by weather.
Aidan Wanner had a touchdown run in each of the second and third quarters to lead the SAMS seventh graders. He finished with six carries for 66 yards and two scores. Trey Schoch added a rushing TD in the first quarter, and AJ Dull reached the end zone in the fourth.
Michael Doherty and Dull each forced fumbles.
James Arnold threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in leading the Starfire eighth graders. He connected with Nick Miller for scores of 12 and 45 yards, then ran one in from the 2-yard line. All three TDs came in the second quarter.
Alex Gorney had a 27-yard TD run in the first quarter, and Aaron Timmons ran a kick back 65 yards for a score to open the second half. The game was then called because of lightning.
