FORT WAYNE — A slow start for the Patriots proved too much to overcome.
The Jay County High School girls basketball team dropped its third straight game Saturday with a 62-39 loss to sectional rival Fort Wayne South Side Archers.
The Archers led 13-6 after the opening eight minutes, and extended the lead to 29-16 heading into halftime. The Patriots (4-4) scored as many points in the third quarter (16) as they did the previous two combined, but weren’t able to cut into the deficit as the Archers responded with 20 points in the frame to lead 49-32 heading into the fourth quarter.
Senior Taylor Homan led the Patriots with 11 points, while sophomore Kendra Muhlenkamp added seven. Britlyn Dues, a senior, and sophomore Gwen Omstead each grabbed seven rebounds.
Jay County’s junior varsity team defeated the Archers, 35-16. Hallie FIelds led the way with 13 points, and Hannah Phillips totaled eight points.
Stars win again
BERNE — Lexi Dellinger eclipsed 20 points and Madi Wurster was close behind as the South Adams High School girls basketball team defeated Heritage on Saturday,
South Adams (3-4, 1-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) jumped out to a 13-9 lead after the first quarter before outscoring the Patriots (4-5, 0-1 ACAC) 14-4 in the second for a 27-13 advantage at halftime. The Starfires held off a surge by the Patriots in the third quarter but maintained its double-digit lead.
Dellinger scored 22 points to lead South Adams, and Wurster followed with 18. Sydney Pierce chipped in with seven points while Calyssa Lehman and Shaelynn Bowman notched four points each.
South Adams’ junior varsity team dropped its game 34-33. Emilee Myers had a team-high 17 points for the Starfires, who got six points each from Lydia Loshe and Ally Weaver.
Three finish second
DAYTON, Ohio — A trio of Patriots finished second in helping the Jay County wrestling team place in fourth place Saturday at the Franklin Invitational.
LaSalle won the 12-team tournament with 268.5 points. Western Brown was second with 183.5, and Ross placed third with 161. Jay County totaled 151.5 points.
Freshman Mason Winner (152 pounds), senior Ivan Hemmelgarn (170) and Gaven Hare (220) all finished in second place in their respective weight classes.
Senior Tyler Leonhard and junior Seth Fugiett placed third at 160 and 126 pounds respectively. Carter Mitchell (106) and Kaimen Sanders (126) were fourth, and Max Schmit (195) finished sixth.
