MUNCIE — It was the Indians’ big guns who had gotten them in position.
With the meet against the host Delta Eagles already decided, the final race — the 400-yard freestyle relay — was the deciding event against Hagerstown.
It would determine whether the Tribe went home with one victory or none.
Freshman Rachel Acheson erased a deficit of more than two seconds and Cassy Martin guaranteed the Fort Recovery High School girls swim team earned a split with Delta and the Hagerstown Tigers on Monday.
“Rachel Acheson really swims well,” said FRHS coach Mindy Bubp, whose 400 freestyle relay team finished second in the event in 4 minutes, 39.42 seconds. It was behind Delta but ahead of two Hagerstown relays, helping the Tribe eke out a 50-48 victory over the Tigers. The Indians lost to Delta, 59-42.
“She’s been working really hard this season,” Bubp said of Acheson. “I’ve really been trying to challenge her this year and make her step up as a freshman and push herself. Cassy Martin, I can always count on her for a good swim and she’s always strong.”
Fort Recovery’s boys came away with a pair of losses, 51-27 to Hagerstown and 85-11 to Delta.
Alexis Bubp earned two individual victories for the FRHS girls, who took the top spot in six total events. Bubp was hardly challenged in both of her victories, winning the 200 individual medley in 2:28.38 for an 11-second win, and finishing the 100 freestyle in 59.45 seconds ahead of Delta’s Samantha Bilby by nearly seven seconds.
Bubp, a junior who was a district qualifier last season, was nearly a half-second off her personal best time in the IM. Coupled with her sub-minute 100 freestyle in her first time swimming the event this season, her mother and coach was happy with the way she opened the season.
“I think she really kind of came out and still swam really hard,” Mindy Bubp said. “I think she’s setting herself up for a pretty good season if she’s doing that first off.”
Like Bubp, Sophie Timmerman and Martin had little to worry about in each of their individual victories. Timmerman claimed the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.44, more than six seconds ahead of Delta’s Jordan Tucker. She was also second in the 500 freestyle in 6:12.44. Martin, who placed second in the 200 freestyle, won the 100 backstroke in 1:07.51 as she left Delta’s Libby Dall nearly half a pool length behind her.
Faith Hull, who was second in the 100 butterfly, teamed with Timmerman, Acheson and Bubp to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:56.81. Martin, Timmerman, Hull and Bubp also combined to win the 200 medley relay for the first victory of the night.
“I wanted to put a strong relay first and that is the relay I think I’m going to use for most of the season,” Mindy Bubp said. “I was hoping they’d come out and do really well. I was real happy with their performance.”
Nolan Thobe earned the best individual finish for the FRHS boys by placing third in the 200 IM. He finished with a time of 2:37.92, and also placed fourth in the 100 butterfly.
Owen Sheridan and Josh Gonzalez also placed fourth for the Tribe. Sheridan had a time of 27.47 seconds in the 50 freestyle and Gonzalez finished the 100 backstroke in 1:28.52.
It was the depth, however, that hurt the Tribe the most, as the Indians often didn’t have enough for more than one swimmer in an event. Still, Bubp said she is optimistic for the season given the Indians have a handful of first-year swimmers.
“I think it was a great first meet,” Bubp said. “It’s just going to take a little bit of time, especially the ones that haven’t swam at all, to get the starts and the turns.”
