MONROE — The Patriots and Starfires had the start they wanted.
The Jay County and South Adams high school wrestling teams both opened the Allen County Athletic Conference dual championships with a pair of victories on Friday at Adams Central.
Jay County, which is defending conference champion, knocked off the Woodlan Warriors in the first round, 51-23, before defeating a depleted Heritage Patriot squad 63-18 in the second round. South Adams, which is hoping to compete for a conference title, beat the Bluffton Tigers 66-13 in the opener and topped the Southern Wells Raiders 50-22
Rounds three through seven will continue at 9 a.m. today.
“We were a little bit worried about Woodlan,” said Myers, whose team trailed three matches in but pulled away rather quickly. “I was happy with the way we wrestled against Woodlan.”
Jay County got nine wins against the Warriors, the first of which from Tyler Leonhard at 160 pounds. He pinned Tucker Wallace in 1 minute, 23 seconds, and the victory gave the Patriots a 6-3 lead. Woodlan nabbed a 9-6 advantage after Rylee Schindler pinned Thomas Hemmelgarn, but Jay County then rattled off five straight to take a lead it never gave up.
Ivan Hemmelgarn (182 pounds), Daniel Ostrowski (195), Lucas Schmit (220), Gaven Hare (285) and Carter Mitchell (106) all picked up wins. Hemmelgarn and Mitchell earned first-period pins, Hare won by decision and Ostrowski and Schmit both received forfeits.
Also winning for Jay County against Woodlan were Davis Anderson (pin) at 120 pounds, Seth Fugiett (pin) at 126 and Kaimen Sanders (pin) at 132.
South Adams, which didn’t have a full, healthy roster for last year’s championship but does this year, needed little time to get ahead of the Tigers, then cruised for the remainder of the match. It was nearly the same story against the Raiders too.

Despite the two victories — the Starfires and Patriots are the only two teams with wins in the first two rounds — SAHS coach Jesse Gaskill wasn’t too pleased with the way his team competed.
“Being critical, yeah we did come off two big wins against conference teams, but we’ve seen better effort in practice,” Gaskill said. “We’re going to have to wake up ready to roll. I don’t know if tonight’s effort is going to cut it tomorrow.”
Heritage only had eight wrestlers, so Jay County was gifted six forfeits for 36 team points.
Leonhard and Hemmelgarn received forfeits to start the match with Heritage. Ostrowski and Hare followed with first-period pins for a 24-0 advantage.
Myers was pleased with Hare’s two victories, the first of which came at heavyweight. The junior hovers around 210 pounds, so he has to give up as much as 75 pounds to an opponent.
“I thought he wrestled (Woodlan’s Malik Murray) pretty tough,” Myers said.
A Heritage win at heavyweight and a forfeit at 106 made it 30-6, and Jay County’s Zakk Atkins was pinned in the third period to make it 30-12. Sanders, who bumped up a weight class against Woodlan, dropped back to 126 to pin Austin Hou.
“Took him a bit to get adjusted, but he came through with a big win,” Myers said of the junior’s match against Woodlan’s Dan Herschberger.
Mitchell Ferguson and Fugiett both received forfeits, Jordan Schricker topped Min Oo by decision to also earn victories against their Patriot counterparts.
Up next for Jay County this morning is the Bluffton Tigers, who had a bye in the second round. South Adams meets Woodlan before the Patriots and Starfires square off in round four. Both of those teams could be undefeated heading into that matchup.
“Jay County is so solid from beginning to end,” Gaskill said. “We’re going to wrestle as aggressive as we can. They’re a tough team.”
Jay County will have a bye during the fifth round while South Adams takes on Heritage. Round six pits the Patriots against Southern Wells and the Starfires against county rival Adams Central. Jay County meets host Adams Central in the seventh round while South Adams has a bye.
“We have to stay focused,” Myers said of the gameplan for today. “Take it one match at a time.”
