Failure to yield
A Portland man and a Wolcottville man were involved in a vehicle collision Monday afternoon west of Portland.
A Jay County Sheriff’s Office deputy was driving southwest on Indiana 67, south of the intersection with county road 75 South, when he saw a 2006 Dodge Caravan start to pull out of a driveway at 2174 W. Indiana 67.
Ryan J. Deetz, 49, 297 Country Road 2, Wolcottville, was southbound on Indiana 67 in a 2012 Ford Fusion. Deetz swerved the Fusion to try and avoid the Dodge Caravan, but it struck the passenger side of his Fusion as it pulled out of the driveway.
Police attributed the cause of the crash to a failure to yield by the driver of the Caravan, Doyle V. Rheinhart, 64, 117 E. North St., Portland.
Damage in the 1:45 p.m. accident was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
Cement barrier struck
A rural Portland woman struck a cement barrier with her car on the north side of Portland Tuesday evening.
Kristie M. Barr, 64, 3532 E. Indiana 26, told Portland Police Department she was turning out of the parking lot in front of H & R Block, 1510 N. Meridian St., when she struck a concrete barrier with her 2012 Chrysler Town and Country.
Damage in the 5:44 p.m. accident was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Backing accident
Two Portland residents were involved in a backing accident Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of East Jay Middle School.
Kelly W. Wilson, 45, 1345 S. Meridian St., told Portland Police Department he was stopped in his 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan, waiting to pick his children up from school, when a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan backed out of a parking space and into the driver side door of his vehicle.
The driver of the 2002 Grand Caravan, Sonda J. Lewis, 42, 701 S. Western Ave., said she didn’t see Wilson’s Grand Caravan when she was backing out of a parking space.
Damage in the 3:10 p.m. accident was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Deer struck
A Portland woman struck a deer with her car Tuesday morning south of Portland.
Valerie L. McGill, 21, 717 W. Third St., was eastbound on county road 550 South, west of the intersection with county road 100 West, when a deer walked out in front of her 2005 Mercury Mountaineer.
McGill told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was unable to avoid striking the deer.
Damage in the 8:03 a.m. accident was estimated
