New Tyson chief sounds upbeat
Business Roundup
The incoming chief executive officer of Tyson Foods Inc. is upbeat about the company’s future.
In remarks at a recent consumer summit reported in Food Business News, Tom Hayes said, “We feel like we’ve got a great position. … We’re very happy with what we do at Tyson Foods and, in no way are we going to back off of what we have been historically. What we’re going to continue to be is a fiercely competitive company that focuses on driving value for consumers and customers.”
Hayes assumes his new role Dec. 31. Tyson Foods Inc. is the parent company of Tyson Mexican Original, Portland.
Asked at the meeting if there was a slowdown in consumer demand for protein, Hayes said just the opposite is the case.
“Protein demand has been extremely strong. You may have seen that we just made an investment in a company called Beyond Meat, which is, certainly, plant-based protein. What we want to do is make sure wherever consumers are interested in protein, that we’re providing a solution that is great-tasting and that’s what we’ve been up to for the last several years,” he said.
Hayes was dismissive about a price fixing lawsuit facing the company, calling it a “tempest in a teapot.”
Third ’copter
Lutheran Hospital, which established a Lutheran Air base at Portland Municipal Airport in 2015, is adding a third critical care transport helicopter, this one at Starke County Airport in Knox.
Like the Portland base, the Lutheran Air III crew will be stationed at the airport 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
A hospital spokesman said the location of each helicopter in Lutheran’s fleet is determined in part by identifying areas of Indiana and Ohio where there are gaps in the availability of air medical transport.
Lutheran Air I is based in Portland, while Lutheran Air II flies out of Wabash Municipal Airport.
Done deal
The planned sale of 17 Scotty’s Brewhouse locations — including one in Muncie — has gone through as expected.
Due North Holdings LLC, based in Arizona, has acquired the brand and plans to expand it throughout the U.S. in the years ahead.
Buy warehouse
Ardagh Group has acquired a warehouse in Winchester for its glass container plant.
The 120,000-square-foot warehouse will replace one that had been used in Muncie.
The warehouse, formerly owned by DMI, is on Industrial Park Drive in Winchester.
New directors
Greenville, Ohio-based Second National Bank has added two new members to its board of directors.
The bank has a branch in Fort Recovery.
Joining the board will be Mike Pax, president and chairman of the board of Pax Machine Works Inc. of Celina, Ohio, and Travis Fliehman, an attorney with Detling, Harlan and Fliehman in Greenville.
Two longtime board members are retiring, Fort Recovery Industries Inc. president and chairman Wes Jetter and former Second National Bank president Marv Stammen.
Second National Bank is part of Park National Corporation, a group of community banks based in Ohio.
Almost done
A deal that would sell almost 1,000 Walgreens and Rite Aid stores may be wrapped up by the end of the year.
The Federal Trade Commission is requiring the sale as a condition for the merger between the two companies.
Kroger Co. is expected to buy some of the stores, while a company called Fred’s Pharmacy may be acquiring others located outside Kroger’s traditional business region.
Comcast biggest
Internet and cable TV provider Comcast now appears to be the most valuable company in Pennsylvania, Philadelphia magazine reports.
Based upon market capitalization, Philly-based Comcast has a value of $147 billion.
In a burger?
Another McDonald’s menu experiment is causing a bit of a stir.
Ever heard of a Nutella burger?
You can’t buy such a thing in the U.S., but McDonald’s introduced “Sweety con Nutella” in Italy in November. It amounts to two buns filled with Nutella, a hazelnut-cocoa filling, and is sold as a dessert.
New therapy
Community Sports and Therapy Center in Coldwater, Ohio, is adding dry needling therapy to its services. In dry needling, a very fine filament needle is inserted through the skin and into tissue, causing a small lesion that helps decrease pain. Spokesmen for the therapy center stressed that dry needling is not the same as acupuncture, but is based on western medical studies.
