FORT RECOVERY — After a hard-fought game against state-line rival Jay County on Saturday, the Indians got a little bit of a breather.
Fort Recovery High School’s girls basketball team remained undefeated with a 52-21 dismantling of the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays on Thursday.
The Indians improve to 5-0 and 2-0 in Midwest Athletic Conference play.
Fort Recovery led 9-3 after the first eight minutes before exploding during the middle quarters.
The Tribe outscored the Blue Jays (2-3, 0-2 MAC) 17-6 in the second period and 20-3 in the third to lead 46-12 heading into the fourth.
Senior Whitney Will was 7-of-8 from the field with two free throws in leading all players with 17 points. She also shared the game-high of six rebounds with teammate Val Muhlenkamp. Grace Thien, Carley Stone and Jocelyn Kaiser added eight points apiece.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team won 22-14 in two quarters of play. Olivia Patch had a game-high eight points, and Brooke Kahlig followed with five points.
SA swimmers split
OSSIAN — South Adams’ swim teams split a meet with the host Norwell Knights on Thursday.
The SAHS girls moved to 8-0 on the year with a 111-69 victory, while the boys fell to 3-3 after a 105-75 loss.
Ashley LeFever won a single event and tied for first in another for the Starfire girls. She won the 100-yard freestyle in 56.41 seconds, and tied with Norwell’s Morgan Markley for the win in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.84 seconds.
Twins Ashton and Brette Klopp won the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle respectively, with Olivia Von Gunten (500 freestyle) and Audrey Burson (100 breaststroke) also earning individual victories.
South Adams won all three relays as well.
Zach Colpaert and Zach Teeple each won a pair of events for the SAHS boys. Teeple was first in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and Colpaert got victories in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Kamen Yoder placed first in the 100 butterfly.
Stars win in OT
BERNE — The South Adams girls basketball team rallied to force overtime and held the Delta Eagles to one point in the extra period in a 36-34 victory Thursday.
After falling behind 19-16 at halftime, South Adams (6-5) cut the deficit to one point, 29-28, heading into the final quarter. The hosts kept the Eagles (6-6) at bay in the final eight minutes of regulation to force overtime.
Madi Wurster led the Starfires with 11 points, and Lexi Dellinger was second with nine points. Sydney Pierce added eight points, with Kayla LeFever and Calyssa Lehman contributing three points each.
The South Adams junior varsity team lost, 44-35. Lydia Loshe and Emilee Myers led the Starfires with 12 and 10 points respectively. Ally Weaver chipped in six points and Taylor Augsburger had four.
Freshmen fall
Despite a strong fourth quarter from Gabe Link, the Jay County freshman boys basketball team lost to Muncie Central on Thursday, 52-47.
Link scored nine of his game-high 20 points in the final seven minutes, but it wasn’t enough as the Patriots fell to 1-3 on the year.
Noah Arbuckle was second for the Patriots with 11 points, while Sheldon Upp and Brayden Sprunger tallied four points each. Gavin Lambert and Peyton Nichols contributed three points apiece, and Brian Williams chipped in two points.
Chiefs sweep Raiders
East Jay Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams both earned victories against the Southern Wells Raiders on Thursday.
The eighth grade squad won 35-11, and the seventh graders came out on top 36-14.
Landon Grimes paced the EJMS eighth graders with 10 points. Brody Auker tallied eight points and Brian Zhang hauled in 12 rebounds.
Ethan Dirksen poured in 13 points for the seventh grade Chiefs. Gavin Muhlenkamp chipped in seven points.
EJ tops S. Wells
PONETO — The East Jay seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams earned Allen County Athletic Conference victories Thursday against the host Southern Wells Raiders.
East Jay’s eighth graders won 36-28 while the seventh grade squad picked up a 24-15 victory.
Natalie Miles scored 17 points to lead the EJMS eighth graders (5-3, 3-1 ACAC), who got seven points from Pacie Denney and five from Grace Saxman. Ana Heath, Alana Kunkler and Madison Fouch contributed two points each.
Andrea Jutte tallied a dozen points for the seventh grade Chiefs (4-4, 3-1 ACAC). Madison Dirksen was second on the team with six points, and Rachel Muhlenkamp recorded four points. Heaven Hambrock totaled two points.
Format changed
The IHSAA executive committee on Thursday approved a formatting change to the state volleyball tournament beginning with the 2017 season.
The state tournament will expand to a four-week tournament, with the sectional tournaments beginning a week earlier than previous years. Sectional will still follow a Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday format, scheduled for Oct. 10, 12 and 14, 2017. Regional will now be a one-day, four-team tournament Oct. 21, 2017, replacing a mid-week, two-team championship.
Semi-state will now be a one-match affair on Oct. 28, 2017, with the state final to be one week later.
