Fisher wins international honor
Business roundup
Fisher Packing Co. of Portland has been winning awards for its products for years.
Now, the longtime local business is receiving international honors.
Sausage and ham products from Fisher won six gold medals and one silver medal this month from the Deutscher Fleischer-Verband and the American Association of Meat Processors.
Those wins qualify Fisher Packing for the Cup of Honor that will be presented May 10 in Frankfurt, Germany, at IFFA, the leading international trade fair for processing, packaging and sales in the meat industry.
“The quality competitions of the German Butchers’ Association not only serve to review our own performance, but they show in a specific way the high quality and diversity of your products to your customers,” association officials said in a formal statement. “The excellent quality of your products also contributes to the positive image of the U.S. butchers’ trade.”
Fisher Packing was recently honored by Jay County Chamber of Commerce in recognition of 70 years of business.
Reports loss
Allegheny Technologies Inc., parent company of Portland Forge, reported a 2015 year-end loss of $378 or $3.53 per share. Sales for the year totaled $3.7 billion.
“2015 was an incredibly difficult year, and the fourth quarter was the most challenging of the year,” said Rich Harshman, chairman, president, and chief executive officer, in a prepared statement. “While aerospace market demand for products from the high performance materials and components segment remained good, an extended drop in demand from the oil and gas market and continued weakness in the global construction and mining equipment market adversely affected profitability.”
