Katy Smeltzer won conference championships in high school.
She has now done the same in college.
The 2015 Jay County High School graduate was part of a winning relay team and scored in three other events for the University of the Cumberlands women’s swim team as the Patriots won the Mid-South Conference Championships Saturday in Kingsport, Tennessee.
Smeltzer swam the third leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay, joining Brittany Litke, Morgan Plowman and Anna Clayton to finish with a time of 1 minute, 38.99 seconds. They finished ahead of Lindsey Wilson College by less than a second.
The freshman was also fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:20.63), and turned in a pair of seventh-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (25.27) and 100 butterfly (1:02.94).
University of the Cumberlands totaled 486 points to win the MSC title in back-to-back seasons. Lindsey Wilson was runner up with 409, and Lindenwood University was third with 404 points.

Helped the NAIA Division II No. 3 University of St. Francis men’s basketball team extend its winning streak to six with a couple of double-digit scoring efforts.
Comer was efficient Tuesday, shooting 5-of-9 from the field and scoring 13 points in 18 minutes in an 88-69 win over Spring Arbor. He also had an assist.
The junior, who has reached double figures 18 times this season, totaled 12 points, one assist and one rebound Saturday as the Cougars (22-4) topped Marian 87-76.

Made a career-high six of her eight free-throw attempts to score 13 points for the Brescia University women’s basketball team Tuesday in a 96-86 victory against West Virginia University Tech.
She was 3-of-6 from the field and had three rebounds for her third straight game reaching double figures in points.
The freshman added 10 points in back-to-back games for the Bearcats (16-12, 11-3 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) in their 70-58 win Saturday against IU Southeast and a 103-58 victory Feb. 2 over Cincinnati Christian.

Was among the top runners in a field of more than 30 in her race Saturday at the Joe Banks Invitational hosted by Ohio Northern.
Miller, who runs for Defiance College, took third place in the 3,000-meter run in 10:34.1. She was one of just three runners to break the 10:40 mark, trailing Otterbein’s Claire Lamb and Ohio Dominican’s Nicole Brown.

Made the most of his time off the bench for the University of Findlay men’s basketball team Feb. 4 in a 95-67 thrashing of Ohio Dominican.
Kahlig scored 11 points to finish tied for second on the team in scoring. He was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and made both of his free throws. He also had four rebounds.
The sophomore scored three points and grabbed two rebounds Saturday in a 94-75 win over Tiffin, the 12th straight win for the Oilers (17-5, 14-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).

Gave the Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team a spark off the bench Saturday in its 74-68 win over Northwood.
Gelhaus shot 3-of-5 from the field and hit a pair of free throws to finish with eight points. He also grabbed six rebounds, including three on the offensive end, and had an assist for the NCAA Division II No. 17 Cardinals (17-4).
The junior had one point and one assist Feb. 4 in a 92-87 victory over Lake Superior State.

Joined a trio of teammates for a third-place relay finish Saturday at the Anderson University Indoor Invitational.
Lehman joined Goshen College teammates Christian Stevens, Luke Graber and Trevor Yoder for a time of 3 minutes, 34.66 seconds, in the 4x400-meter relay. They were about three seconds behind runner-up Berea.

Led the University of Northwestern Ohio women’s basketball team in rebounds Wednesday in its 83-57 loss to Indiana Tech.
Kahlig grabbed seven rebounds for the Racers (13-14). She also scored two points.
She had five points, three rebounds and an assist in Saturday’s 71-60 victory over Cornerstone.

Placed fifth Saturday for the NAIA No. 4 Indiana Tech wrestling team in the Greyhound Open at the University of Indianapolis.
The freshman received a bye in his opening round match, but lost in the second round to Purdue’s Cody Pae. In the consolation round, Miller received a bye but then won three consecutive matches to reach the consolation semifinals and Pae beat him again.

Finished second in rebounds for the University of Northwestern Ohio men’s basketball team Wednesday in its 64-55 loss to Indiana Tech.
Pottkotter grabbed four boards for the Racers, who slipped to 5-14.
He also had four points and two blocks.
The senior totaled three points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal in Saturday’s 79-63 loss to Cornerstone.
