Freshmen improvement continues

HUNTINGTON — At nearly every meet, the Patriot youngsters show improvement.
Jay County High School freshmen Karlie Bullard and Riley Leavell set new career bests Tuesday in the Patriot gymnastics team’s 100.55-95.150 loss to the Huntington North Vikings.
Leavell posted a 7.8 on balance beam and added a 7.6 on floor exercise to set a new career-high on each event.
Bullard scored an 8.3 on floor, a new high, to place second on the team.
Leavell added a 7.85 on vault and 6.9 on uneven bars for an all around score of 30.15. Bullard also scored 8.25 on vault, 7.6 on beam and 7.2 on bars for an all around total of 31.35.
Junior Maddie Strausburg finished third across the board. Her highest score was an 8.55 on floor, followed by 8.4 on vault, 8.25 on beam and 7.3 on bars. Her all-around score of 32.5 was highest on the team.
Miranda Hibbard, the lone senior, earned her best score of 8.5 on vault to finish second. She also had an 8.1 on floor, 6.75 on beam and 4.8 on bars. She had an all around score of 28.35.

Two earn all-state
A pair of Jay County senior wrestlers were named to the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Senior Academic All-State team.
Two juniors were also honored for their academic achievements
Levi Hummel and Colton Compton received first-team honors. Hummel a 170-pound semi-state qualifier this season, boasts a 4.03 GPA. Compton, a 138-pound regional qualifier, has a GPA of 3.85.
Ivan Hemmelgarn and Tyler Leonhard were given Junior Academic All-State honors. Hemmelgarn (160) and Leonhard (152) have matching 3.9 GPAs. Both were semi-state qualifiers.

To be considered for the first-team, wrestlers must maintain a 3.75 GPA or higher.

East Jay falls
MUNCIE — A trio of forfeits worked against the East Jay Middle School wrestling team in a 52-42 loss to the Delta Eagles.
Blayne Daniels (80 pounds), Dawson Hundley (85), Braden McIntire (135), Mason Winner (145), Garrett Mann (152) and Levi Peterson (HWT) all won by pinning their respective opponents.
Dyllan Garringer, a 75-pounder, won by forfeit.
Zeke Corwin, Chandler Bush, Cooper Jacks and Garringer each earned victories in their exhibition matches.
Chiefs beat Bruins
East Jay’s sixth grade boys basketball teams knocked off the Blackford Bruins on Tuesday.
The A team won 38-33, and the B team topped the Bruins 30-5.
Gavin Muhlenkamp led the EJMS A team with 17 points, and Crosby Heniser followed with eight. Ethan Dirksen and Adam Muhlenkamp chipped in with five and four points respectively.
Keegan Hartzell’s eight points led the B team, which also got six points from Cristian Marentes.
Adrek Pogue and Jacob Hart had four points each.
