Capsule Reports

Pinned down
A Portland man was injured Sunday when he was pinned to the ground by the car in which he was changing the oil.
Keith J. Hiatt, 43, was working on a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix in the driveway at his 316 E. Elder St. home.
Elizabeth J. Dixon, 27, 137 ½ E. High St., the car’s owner, drove it onto ramps, but then the car dropped down on top of Hiatt. He complained of pain over his entire body.
Sixteen firefighters and three trucks arrived on scene to help Jay County EMS in assisting Hiatt, who was transferred to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. 
Damage in the 2:35 p.m. accident was estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.

Needles found
Portland police responded to several calls about needles on the ground over the weekend.
At 4:45 p.m. Saturday, an unknown caller reported a needle on the ground behind Jay County Public Library, 315 N. Ship St.
Jesse D. Modisett, 925 N. Franklin St., called at 6:30 a.m. Sunday to report a discarded needle near Jay County Pawnbrokers, 1205 N. Meridian St.
That was followed by a 2:41 p.m. report from Bobbie Jo Betz, 410 S. Meridian St., indicating there was a syringe in the alley near her house. Police found two more needles when they arrived.
Police disposed of all of the needles.

Backing accident
A Pennville man was involved in a backing accident Sunday at Wal-Mart, 950 W. Votaw St., Portland.
Christopher C. Martin, 155 S. Washington St., backed up in his 2002 Ford F-150 and it hit a car being driven south in the parking lot by Sheila M. Brunswick, 41, 7325 E. 500 North, Portland.
Brunswick was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Impala registered to Alvin Muhlenkamp, same address.
Damage in the 2:50 p.m. accident was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.

Deer accident
A Bryant woman had an accident with a deer at 9 p.m. Saturday.
Molly A. Keller, 35, 3524 W. 650 North, was driving west on county road 650 North when a deer ran into the roadway. She could not avoid hitting it with the 2007 Cadillac Escalade she was driving.
The Escalade is registered to Charles E. Keller, same address.
Damage was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.

Off road
A Warren woman drove into a ditch at 9:44 p.m. Friday after swerving to avoid a deer.
Jennifer N. Wooten, 29, 7709 S. 200 West, was driving east on Indiana 26 when a deer ran into the roadway at its intersection with county road 300 West. She avoided the animal, but went off the sorth side of county road 50 North and into a ditch.
Damage to her 2006 Pontiac G6 was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.

False alarm
Redkey Fire Department responded at 1:24 p.m. Sunday to a fire at 203 S. Meridian St.
The firefighters arrived at 1:26 p.m. to a candle left on the stove that caused smoke to build up in the home. They stayed to air out the property and left around 1:40 p.m. There were 18 firefighters and three trucks on scene.
