Wyatt Geesaman got off to a hot start.
The Patriot defense did, too.
Geesaman scored eight of his game-high 17 points in the first quarter and the Jay County High School freshman boys basketball team held Yorktown to just one point in the opening frame Monday in a 42-27 victory over the Tigers.
Jay County, which moves to 6-2 with the win, led 14-1 after the first seven minutes, thanks to Geesaman’s scoring and five points from Parker Grimes. Yorktown cut into the deficit during the second as the Patriots took a 20-12 lead into the locker room.
The Patriot advantage moved back to double digits after three quarters, 29-17, and another eight points from Geesaman in the fourth period put the game out of reach.
Gavin Randall and Grimes both had seven points in support of Geesaman. Xavier Ninde chipped in with five points, and Gabe Faulkner added four.
Grahm Reedy led the Tigers with nine points.

UNION CITY, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s freshman boys basketball team picked up a 46-36 victory Monday against the Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks.
Derek Siefring had a game-high 22 points for the Indians, who also got eight points from Blayne Tobe.
Mason Will and Noah Lennartz each tallied six points, with Dillan Cates and Kody Shinaberry adding two points apiece.
Tribe tops Chiefs
Fort Recovery Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams beat the East Jay Chiefs on Monday.
The Tribe eighth graders (7-1) defeated the Chiefs 37-10, and the seventh grade Indians (8-0) won 29-14.
Brooke Kahlig and Olivia Patch both scored 10 points to lead the FRMS eighth graders. Val Muhlenkamp added eight, and Chloe Showalter tallied four.
Mikele Suman led East Jay with six points, and Macey Weitzel added two points.
Alli Vaughn of FRMS scored a game-high 12 points in the seventh grade game. Hope Wendel added five points, with Brenna Homan tallying four and Kierra Wendel adding three.
Grace Saxman led the Chiefs with six points. Natalie Miles and Alana Kunkler scored three points each.
Tickets on sale
Tickets for the Allen County Athletic Conference boys and girls basketball tournaments are now on sale.
The Jay County Patriot squads host South Adams on Jan. 12, with the girls game slated for 6 p.m. and the boys’ tilt to follow.
The semifinal round will be Jan. 15, with the championship games Jan. 16 at South Adams.
Single-game tickets are $6, with a tournament pass available for $10. Tickets will be available in the Jay County and South Adams athletic offices.
