Season begins with win
MARION — The Patriots were looking forward to opening their season for more than a month.
The preparation resulted in a victory.
Jay County High School’s gymnastics team defeated the Marion Giants on Thursday, 92.2-47.7
Junior Jocelyn Huey was first in three events for the Patriots (1-0), scoring an 8.65 on the vault and an 8.0 on the floor exercise. She tied freshman teammate Karlie Bullard with a 6.9 for a win on uneven bars.
Maddie Strausburg earned a career-best 8.7 on the balance beam to win the event, and her all-around score of 31.15 was also first, edging Huey by five hundredths of a point. Strausburg added an 8.25 (second place) on vault, 6.5 (fourth) on bars and a 7.6 (second) on floor.
Bullard (29.95), senior Miranda Hibbard (28.675) and freshman Riley Leavell (26.825) were third through fifth respectively in the all-around competition.
Bullard was also fourth on vault (8.25), third on beam (7.375) and fourth on floor (7.425). Hibbard earned third on floor (7.5), fourth on beam (7.175), fifth place on vault (8.2) and sixth on bars (5.8).
Competing in her first high school meet, Leavell scored 6.7 on bars (third), 8.1 on vault (sixth), and 6.45 on floor (sixth).
Tribe rolls, again
ROCKFORD, Ohio — For the second time in as many games, the Fort Recovery girls basketball team won by 30 points.
The Tribe rolled to a 50-20 victory Thursday against Midwest Athletic Conference foe Parkway.
The Indians (9-2, 4-0) got out to a hot start, taking a 21-2 lead after the opening quarter. They pushed the advantage to 31-7 at half, and the score was 41-13 in favor of the Tribe heading into the fourth quarter.
Whitney Will scored a game-high 14 points to go with her seven rebounds and five steals. Grace Thien tallied 10 points and three rebounds, and Jocelyn Kaiser followed with eight points and six boards.
Haley Hawk led the Panthers with eight points.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity squad also won, 23-17. Hannah Knapke had a game-high nine points and Chloe Metzger added five points. Aleigha Jenkins tallied four points to go with her game-high eight rebounds.
Stars sweep
BERNE — The South Adams swim teams both picked up wins against the Bluffton Tigers on Thursday.
The Starfire girls moved to 10-1 on the season with a 111-74 victory. The SAHS boys won 99-86 to remain undefeated at 9-0.
Ashton Klopp and Ashley LeFever won two individual events and helped on two winning relays for the Starfire girls. Klopp was first in both the 200-yard individual medley and 500 freestyle, with LeFever winning the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Brette Klopp also earned two individual victories in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Audrey Burson (100 breaststroke) and Von Gunten (100 freestyle) also picked up single wins.
Daniel Burson won both the 200 and 500 freestyle races for the boys. Zach Teeple (200 IM), David Steffen (100 freestyle) and Daniel Steffen (100 breaststroke) finished first in their respective events.
The SAHS boys also won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
