Deer strike
A rural Portland man struck a deer with his SUV Friday on county road 300 North in Jackson Township.
Richard A. Steveson, 53, 5870 E. Indiana 26, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was traveling east on county road 300 North near county road 350 West when a deer entered the roadway. He said he could not avoid hitting the animal with his 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer.
Damage in the 6:25 p.m. crash is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.

Check stolen
A Portland woman reported at 9:52 p.m. Wednesday one of her husband’s checks had been stolen.
Christine Kelly, 6031 W. 200 South, told a Portland police officer one of her husband’s checks was taken while he was at work at J A Miller & Sons Oil in Dunkirk.
She said she is not sure when the check was taken.
Police learned the check had been used the check at Wal-Mart to purchase electronics worth about $454.42. The items were then returned to the store for a refund of $405.27.
 
Backing crash
A Portland man’s truck hit a vehicle at 2:29 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of Pak-a-Sak, 1300 Meridian St., Portland.
David E. Franks, 53, 1210 N. Franklin St., told a Portland police officer he was backing up his 2003 Chevrolet truck and collided with another car.
Tiffany K. Lowe, 21, 8704 W. Indiana 67, Redkey, said she was stopped in the parking lot when Franks’ truck hit the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze she was driving.
The Cruze is registered to Chase E. Lowe, same address.
Damage is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
