Jay girls swim team wins Celina invitational
Patriots win eight events in claiming third invite championship
CELINA, Ohio — The Patriot boys and girls both scored 282 points.
The boys were third out of 16 teams.
The girls were tops in the 18-team field.
Jay County High School’s girls swim team earned its third trophy of the season Saturday by winning the Celina Rotary Invitational at Auglaize-Mercer Counties YMCA.
The Patriots were 42 points ahead of runner up Lima Shawnee, and Ottawa-Glandorf was third with 220 points.
Fort Recovery’s girls were seventh with 180 points.
Both Wapakoneta (358) and Lima Shawnee (332) finished ahead of the JCHS boys.
Anne Vormohr, Alex Bader and Sophie Bader tallied two individual victories each for the JCHS girls. Vormohr earned wins in both the 200-yard freestyle (2 minutes, 1.23 seconds) and 100 freestyle (54.08 seconds). Alex Bader won the 200 individual medley (2:17.9) and 100 butterfly (1:01.82), and her older sister Sophie was victorious in the 500 freestyle (5:25.11) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.65).
The Patriots also got wins in the 200 medley relay (1:55.8) and 200 freestyle relay. Sophie Bader and Vormohr joined Jamie Valentine and Ashley Mark to win the medley relay, while Vormohr and the Baders teamed with Kaitlyn Dow for a win in the 200 freestyle relay.
Earning top-eight finishes were Valentine (seventh – 100 breaststroke), Dow (eighth – 500 freestyle) and Mark (eighth – 100 butterfly). The 400 freestyle relay team of Elizabeth McDowell, Alex Bader, Mark and Dow was sixth.
Fort Recovery’s Cori Stone finished second and fourth respectively in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Alexis Bubp was fourth in the 500 freestyle, and Cassy Martin placed fifth in the 200 IM. Sophie Timmerman was fifth in both the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke events.
Payton Thobe, Stone, Bubp and Martin teamed to finished sixth in the 200 freestyle relay, with Stone, Timmerman, Bubp and Martin also finishing sixth in the 200 medley relay.
Sok Vormohr earned third- and fifth-place finishes respectively for the Jay County boys in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Connor Daniels placed fourth in the 100 freestyle and was two spots behind Vormohr in the 50 freestyle. Christopher McDowell finished sixth in the 500 freestyle and eighth in the 200 IM.
Also earning top-eight finishes were Jason Minnich (sixth – 100 freestyle), Ian Reynolds (sixth – 100 backstroke) and Garrett Campbell (seventh – 200 freestyle).
Travis Barton, Minnich, Vormohr and Daniels teamed to place third in the 200 freestyle relay. The 400 freestyle relay team of Tayler Smeltzer, McDowell, Reynolds and Campbell was fifth, and the 200 medley relay team (Vormohr, Daniels, Minnich, Barton) finished seventh.
